Honolulu, Oct. 8, IBM. li&J-Uui
cided to postpone the Philadelphia's
departure at least until the arrival
of the Australia's mail on the 11th
inst. Before reaching this conclu-
Bion
I consulted with tho United
States Minister, whose vtows coin
cided entirely with my own, and I
was further con Cr mod in my opinion
by the receipt of a petition to keep
tho Philadelphia at Honolulu, sign
ed by several prominent merchants
and business men representing largo
American monoyed interests. This
petition is inclosed.
It is a faet that should not be lost
sight of, that English iufluonco is
always opposed to American influ
ence in the Hawaiian Islands. It is
colonial aud local in its character,
influenced Jargely, if not wholly, by
trade jealousies, but it is a potent fac
tor and is strong enough to orutilu-t
ally influence the attitude of the
British diplomatic representatives i
and to hare its effect upon British
naval officors who remain there for I
any length of time. The existence I
of this antagonism and of its tutiu
ences should always bo takou iuto
account.
Had tho department orders given
mo discretion in the matter I should
have left the Philadelphia at Hono
lulu and returned to ban Francisco
with my staff by mail stoamor, fail
iug the arrival of tho Charleston by
the 8th, but as they were entirely
unqualified I had no choice but to
obey thom at the earliest moment
that such a course was justified by
paramount public interests. I trust
that another ship will bo sont to
Honolulu at the earliest practicable
moment.
Letter From Mrs. Bradloy.
Editor Bulletin:
Will you bo so kind a to contra
dict n statement made in tho Adver
tiser of the 27th inst., which is utter
ly falae and which shows how ready
they are to say what is unjust and
what will injure ono in the eyes of
others. For tho sako of my husband
who is absent, and for my children,
I wish to state that wo do not owe
Mrs. Lack one cent, as I can prove.
When Mr. Bradloy wished to give a
concert ho was desirous of purchas
ing a 'collo, but had not tho available
cash at the time. Mrs. Lick offered
to lend $25 at 20 percent. This
gonorous offer was accepted aud the
'cello was bought from Mr. I'aty of
Bishop's hank, aud not from Eug
lantl. The Velio was a valuable and
sweet-toned one aud worth consider
ably more than was given for it.
Whou in urgent need of money for
pressing expenses, Mr. Bradley triod
to sell it and stated it was worth
S100, which it certainly was. Mr.
Merger very kindly lent him $25 and
promised to try aud sell the 'cello
for him. As to Mr. Bradley telling
His friends or his departure, l beg to
state wo had no frionds. nor do we
enter any one's house but to givo I
music lessons, his nanio was printed
in the paper three days before ho
left. This ought to have satisfied ,
the curious. My furniture has not ,
been seized. I have allowed Mrs.
Lack to take my school desks aud '
sewing machine, because I knew this
act was unlawful and she will have !
to pay dearly for this. The matter
is now in Lawyer Kinney's hands. ,
What am the laws in this couutry?
Even had the debt been owing, in a
wife responsible for her husband's
debtsT The lawyers tell me, no;
then why does the law allow the '
Marshal aud Mrs. Lack to make a
new law for themselves!
Mr. Bradley came hero on
Mr. Mackintosh's recommendation, i
whoso letter I havo in my possession, i
also in consequence of a paragraph, i
which appeared in tho A. 0. C. writ- '
ten by Mr. M., which stated that
there was a great demand for a good
musician here, aud a choir-trainer, j
Mr. Bradley's testimonials aud refer
ences are of the best, but he had uot
a chauco of being heard here.
