SUE BUOKE INTO SOCIETY.
How an Outaido Younp Woman Got
Into a La Qrango Function With
Thoy had a surpriso out iu La
Grange night boforo last and a young
woman accomplished thoatnnzmniit
with ono leg, thrust through thu
plaster ceiling of the schoolhouso
where La Grange society was hold
ing that fine old form of innocent
church members' entertainment
known as a "district school." Sho
did not mean to introduce either
now features or unexpected anatomy
into tho proceedings, hut by com
mon consent she added greatly to
the oven inn's entertainment, more
perhaps than tho ladies aud gentle
men who had all of their physiology
on tho ground floor, more or less
covered, and, as it wore, esoteric, and
left to the imagination.
What happened seems to havo
been this: La Grange society decided
to hold a district school like thoy
usod to have in the old times before
tho war. Mr. Burkholdor was ap
pointed schoolmaster for tho night,
and everybody who was anybody in
La Grange was there. There was
Col. Dan Munn aud Judge Horton
and President Horton of tho Chicago
& Eastern Illinois, G. J. Corey, Fred.
Titsworth of the Elgin Watch com
pany, J. W. Ward, and, iu fact, all
of tho upper air and solar walk of
La Grange, together with their sis
tors, cousins, auutp, and relations by
marriage, such as wives aud mothers-in-law.
They district schooled un
til district schooling palled upon
repel ition, and everybody was just
beginning to wish that he had not
come, when suddenly they wore glad
thoy had. There was a crack iu tne
ceiling, then a crash, then a cloud of
plaster dust, then a mulllcd scream,
and then a disticlly feminine limb,
which kept coming down and com
ing down, past the neat gaiter with
rather a high heel, past the hosiery
to the garter, until strong men shud
dered aud even tho bravest held his
breath for a time. Tho leg wiggled
and displaced more plaster, which
served some of the inhuman observ
ers right, because it got into their
eyes. Thou it began to disappear
aud finally was lost into the ceiling
again, back into the enfolding mys
tery of the uukuowu whence it had
come like a dove's wing in Owen
Khayyam, that boat its way from
night by tho poet's fire.
After everybody had finished
laughing an explanation was sought
and furnished by a badly scared jani
tor. Some of his young lady friends
wanted to see tho show, so ho had
taken them up into tho unlloored
attic, whore thev could view it
through tho ventilator. Tho parti
cular young woman who had so
nearly broken into La Grange society
was of a stout build aud of an ex
perimental bent of mind. He had
told lier not to tread on the laths
between the joists, but sho heeded
him not, woe worth the day, aud if
it had not been for the way in which
she fell she would have arrived bo
low. No, she was not hurt and he
would not tell her name. She was a
good girl and she had already gone
