NEW OURE FOB DIPHTHERIA.
United States Consul Mason Gives
Frank Mnron, United States con
sul at Frankfort, has submitted to
the dopartinout of statu auiost intor
ostiug report of ntiti-toxino, a now
curative and preventive of diph
theria. Hu explained that ho is Im
pelled to do this because tho subject
is about to engage tho attention of
cougross, becauso of the. largn mi ru
bor of inquiries for detailod Infor
mation concerning anti-toxine, and
becauso at Frankfort is tho only es
tablishmuut when it has boon pro
duced commercially in quantities
adequato to moot tho rapid increase
in demand. lie suggests the early
publication of the report. Mr.Masou
gives a clear and dotailed description
of overy step in the process of pro
duction of the new remedy, preced
ed by au accurate history of the
discovery and its developments. The
factory at Frankfort to which ho re
fers is the "Farebroorke," at Hoesch-on-Maiu.
Sheep and goats at first
omploi'ed to produce t be serum wero
discarded bceaiifo their timies wero
affected by the various foods thoy
consumed and recourse was had to
Tho establishment now utilizes
tho blootl of sevenly.six horses aud '
has a trained corps of moro than
fifty men omployou in this one work, ,
producing t present about 2000 ;
doses per day, aud by tho end of this ,
mouth it will rupply tho domain',
It is absolutely requisite that tho
horses be young, vigorous aud physi
cally perfect, and up racing stud was
ever bolter housed, excicfcod, fed
aud cared for. The auti-toxiuo im
proves with ago during tho first two
mouths; tho Gorman physicians no
longer tiso it fresh, when it is apt to
cause a skin eruption. Au early ap
plication, howover, is of the utmost
i importance. In seventy-two easo3 of
children treated within two days of
the first appuarauco of diphtheria,
but two cases wero fatal aud tho
1 death rato in such cases is placod at
1 i porcent. In Germany whoro tho
fatal cases used to average GO per
cent aud not less than 6000 lives
woro annually sacrificed to the diph
i theria scourco. tho mortality list has
I beon reduced to loss than ouo-fourlh
and it will bo still furthor reduced
when the country physicians use it
freely. A serious epidemic of diph-
theria at Trieste has been practically
mastered by anti-toxiuo.

to contract with individuals or com
panies for tho coustruction of irriga

Each settler will be pormitted to

Shot by His Friend.
At Los Angeles, Cal., lately, J. F.
Maguire, a mounted police officer,
shot and soriously injured John
Grant, a contractor. Maguire had
dismounted from his horse in a liv
ery stable and had his revolvor in
his hand. Grant slapped him on
the neck by way of salutation aud
Maguire, turning suddenly, dis
charged the pistol, tho shot taking
effect in Grant's thigh, inflicting a
dangerous wound. The men hare
been intimate frieuds for ten years!
Should bo used in attempting to
euro that very disagreeable disease,
catarrh. As catarrh originates in
impurities in the blood, local appli
cations can do no permanent good.
Tho common bouso method of treat
ment is to purify tho blood, and for
this purposo thero is no preparation
superior to Hood's Sarsaparilla.
