HALF-TONE ENGRAVINGS.
How tho Illustrations of tho Maga- i
zlnes Are Mado.
Pictures for tho illustration of I
1 magazines and soino newspapers
aro now mado direct ftom t photo
graphs. A glass screen with clia-1
mond scratched linen, ruled nt right
angles bo cloro together that tho
spaces can hardly bo distinguished, .
is placed ono-eignth of an inch in
front of tho sensitive plant in tho
photographic camera. Looked
through, tho effect is much tho samo ,
as gazing through n sievo. These
lines re-appear in tho half-tone on
graving when printed.
Tho photograph, or wash drawing,
from which tho photo-engraving is
taken is photographed in tho usual
way and with tho usual sonsitivo
plant, with the previously described
screen in tho camera betweon tho
plate and tho picture. This pro
duces a negative of tho picture,
showing tho fine cross linos repre
sented uy clear glass. Now in ordor

tho film of tho negative is treated plicated case with the proper and correctly ground glass, and
to ono or two coats ol collodion,
which Rives it a sufficient consist
ency to permit of its being romovod.
This film is transposed to tho oppo-1
sito side of another glass. After
careful mounting this new negative '
is roady to bo used as a medium for
printing on tho zino plato.
Tho faco of tho plato is buffed to
tho highest degree of polish, then I
coateti with a solution of albumon ;
and gelatine, thou sensitized with t
bichromate ammonia. It in then
dried and placed in tho printing
frame, tho coated sido next to the i
negative film.
Tho case is then oxposed to tho
sun or light three to five miuutos, or
to an electric light for fifteen or
twenty minutes. Tho light passes
through tho heavy, thick glass of
tho printing frame, thon through
tho negative, striking tho sensitized
plato and decomposing tho chemi-1
cals wherever it may fall. Whero j
the plate is protected by tho shad-1
ows and half-tones of tho negativo j
the sun light has less effect, and
where tho shadows aro dense it has
no effect.
This plate is then removed from
the framo in a dark room and caro-'
fully washed under funning water
for several minutes, then dried and
heated until the picture appears of
a dark brown color. The back of
tho plate is rubbed with wax while
hot to protect it from the etching
solution, which is mado from per
chloride of iron. Tho picturo on
tho plato is acid proof, and tho etch
ing solution eats only whero the
plat is unprotected that part
wuicn is blank in tne unisneu en
graviug. The plato is allowed to
remain in the acid bath about fifteen
1 minutes, or until sufficient dopth is
reached. It is then washed and is
ready for tho router and the printer.

"Tho shredder and ongiuo require very litllo caro or attention."
