i Belief for Seasickness.
Dr. Ivan A. Mitropolsky, of Mos
cow, warmly recommends, on tho
ground of bis personal experience,
tho following simple method for
provonting or aborting all symptoms
of soasicknoss. As soon as giddiness,
nausea, etc., appear, tho author shuts
his oyes and uegins to mako doop
and slow inspirations and expira
tions. In a few moments (some
times after three or four respiratory
cycles) tho symptoms disappear, to
yield to a comfortablo subjoctivo
sensation. Ou their reappearance
tho same procedure is ropeated again
and again. If tho recurrence bo
rather frequent, it is better to per
form the procedure in a recumbent
posturo (with clojod eyes'). Since
tho time the author has begun to
practico tho method, ho never yet
suffered from vomiting on board.
In referring to this caso in the
London Medical Recorder, Dr. Idel
son says that Dr. Mitropolsky seems
to think that tho means proposed
by him are norel. Meanwhile, in
tho British Medical Journal, March
24, 1888, p. 67G, ho will find a very
interesting noto by Dr. J. J. Leiser,
in which tno writer says: fl) That
seasickness is caused by irregular
and imporfect respiration, leading,
necessarily, to an inadoquato aera
tion of tno pationt's blood, which
consequently becomes poisonous to
his brain and gives rise to sympa
thetic sickness; (2) that a system of
regular freo breathing prevents sick
ness or rapidly relieves it; and (3)
that his experiments were success
fully ropoated by Drs. Q. O. Stock
man and C. w. O. Prentice, who,
having selected ten suffering passen
gers, each seated himself with fivo
of them and "timed tho breathing
in the following tnannor: Thoy tho
doctors raised tho hand from tho
knee, indicating an inspiration, and
dowu again for an expiration, thus
timing tho respirations to exactly
twenty per minute. At tho expira
tion of one hour, tho activo symp
toms in each caso had entirely sub
sided." By this timo tho doctors
had thoroughly educated their pa
tients in the modus operandi of tho
cure. Tho casos continued to bo
permanent "cures" during tho re
mainder of the voyago from Queons
town to tho United States. The
wrttors concluded by assorting that
"the cure is infallible in all cases
that persist in carrying it out."
