POWER OF NEW ARMY RIFLE.
Bullets from the Krag-Jorgenson Will
Penetrate Four Fot Pine Wood.
New York, Feb. 10. Interesting
touts of the new KrnR-Jorgonsen
rifle, with which the army is being
supplied, havo been made at Willot's
Toint, by Capt. W. M. Black of tho
engineer corps. Firing was done on
several days at all kinds of targota
and defenses to find tho penetrativo
power of the bullets. Pieces of inch
pino boards wero blocked together
until a total thickness of forty-eight
inches was obtained. Shots weru
fired at this, and two ballB passed
entirely through. None stopped
loss thau thirty-six inches in tho
wood. Substituting oak for pine
tho greatest penetration obtained
was thirty-two inches. Iron platos
two-thirds of an inch thick wero
cleanly ponot rated. Faschinoc, two
feet in diameter hardly deflected
tho bullet from its course Several
peculiarities were observed in tho
action of theso small caliber bullots.
The old Springfield chunk of lead
flattons out when it strikes anything
it cannot easily penetrate, a nit wuon
fired into sand does not loso its
shapo. The Krag-Jorgenson bullots,
however, go to pieces in sand, noth
ing being found on tlioni save the
nickel cap which completely encases
tho lead. ;
