became a law."
Mr. Fotor ii tho prineipil in thn
firm of E A. Foster At Co. of
Winona, Minn., the most oxtoucho
shippers west of Chicago. Minne
sota, Wisconsin aud tiie Dakotas
furnish the markets on which the
firm depends for its supply.
During last spring, when the
prices were low, tho firm gathered
in all tho eggs it could aud stored
them in cold Btorage in Chicago.
Tho Foster firm was appealed to
when there was a big demaud for
eggs to break iuto the reserve. It
always declined to do so
Foster said to-night:
"When I was satified tho cold
weather had come to stay I divided
my eggs iuto three parte. Ono part
1 sent to New York, one to Boston
aud ouo 1 kept here. As there can
bo no fresh supplies while tho pre
sent weather continues, and as theio
are no holdings outside of mine, 1
practically control the market."
Moaauring Rods That Must Bo Oaru
Not so many years ago .(K)l inch
marked on a drawing would have
been objected to on tho ground that
it was dillicult or impossible to work
so closely to measures. At tho pres
ent time .0005 inch is measured in
every fiuo workshop, and dimensions
given in hundredths or oven thou
sandths of au inch frequently ap
pear on drawiucs without objection
on tho part of tho workmen. The
instruments of measurement are
' now made with such a degree of re
lined accuracy that even tho warmth
of hand may expand a rod twelve
inohos long so that tho amount of
expansion cau be measured.
It has thus become important in
' fine moasurmout to be careful that
tho temperaturo of the niece to bo
; measured or gauged should have tho
same temperaturo as that of the in
strument by which its size is deter
mined. By first handling a rod of
the leueth named and measuring it,
particularly if tho rod be of brasa
or copper, and then, after allowing
I tho rod to cool, handling tho gauge
j until tho latter expands, it is found
that a discrepancy of from 0007
inch to .01 inch may be sometimes
made apparent, duo outiroly to dif-
ferences of temperature.--American
