and by generous rantrilmtlons of food to
the men In the field and on guard in Hono
lulu added greatly to tho comfort and
efficiency of the national forces. Tor this
Important service tho Commander-in-Chief
desires to oxprcss the thanks of tho Gov
ernment. While utsualtles among the defenders
of tho Government havo fortunately been
few, the country has been called upon to
mourn the untimely death of the Hon.
Charles L. Carter, who, bravely exposing
himself at the beginning of hostilities, was
fatally wounded, whereby a life full of
promise In public n Hairs was lost to the
country. Special recognition Is also due
to I.Iout. lloll, Thornton and 1).V. Lokana
of tho police force, and Herman K. Lude
wig, Lieutenant of Co. 1", N. G, II., who
were severely wounded vlfllo heroically
contending with the armed enemies of the
Government and will carry honorable
scars to tlio end of their lives.
