cal farmor o' Colusa county, writes
to tho Sun as follows concerning '
the growing of sugar beets: '
Siignr-bufts aro our coming Indus- i
try. Every farmer should plant i
from one to ten acres of sugar-boots j
this spring on his finest and best
land. AS1UO iroiu luuir usu lur mi- j
gar production, they nro tho most
irouucm ' nuu imuiiuiuiu uiup
'armor can produce for hogs, cattle,
horses, sheep, chickens, etc. Tho
ground should bo plowed deep with
a single plow ami harrowed fine,
again plowed after the lnt rains to
kill weeiU aud again harrowed.
Then plant in narrow rows and thin,
but leave thick enough to prevent
them growing over four inches
through. They are better feed for
stock than pumpkins or anything
else. They can bo left in tho ground
or pulled aud stacked. (
Mr. Terrill, who lives on tho east ,
side, is now feeding froih pulled
beets to his stock with tho best of '
results. Tho factories will bo built
as soon as the boots are raised, which '
can and should be douo this present
season. Tho seed is raised in Ger
many of a very highly improved per
centage in sugar product.
There aro parties hero now to
make arrangements to build a fac
tory, but tho first thing tho beets
must bu plauted during tho next
month. We pay each year to for
eign countries for sugar uh much as
tho three Into gold bond issues.
Tho sugar-beet industry will keep
at homo tho gold wo aro tending
abroad for sugar.
