Mr. Hartwell'u Address
Editor Bulletin:
I wont on Thursday ovtsniiiR Inst
to tho nnnexitioti tin'otiiifr eulnly to
hear tho flpL-ei'li of ilutlgo Ilnrtuell.
I oxpot'ttul to ln'.ir a good and Milli
Hunt reason why tlimo Islands
fliotild ho nnncxcd to tho United
State?. 1 was terribly tliappoiutf d.
The nniti rnison givon was "that
liuwHii win now, and in tho futuro
woulil bo tho koy to tho mnritiuio
dominion of tho 1'huihV after tho
Isthmian canals aro out." This is
illusivo. Jl wis trim undor tho foi
tntr condition of Pacific navigation,
lint, nccorriiiiR to tho report of the
AniKiioaii CotninUsionur in J 8815,
Samoa is and will b of far groat or
importance to America than Hono
lulu. Evmi In lfSo" tliero ! landed
at Apia, undor all tho cxMting dis
advantag.'?, ovor $200000 uf Atmn
mn goods shippud by failiug ships
from San Francisco. In niuo wouks
of hi stsy ho saw threo sailing ships
unloading tlii'ir I'argood to Amu i
ean and IJiigliuu houses. That was
niti" yo-iM in; tl'o iiurnsi siiu'f is
ono'inou?. Tiio pom ion of Apia
mk.tvi it a distributing point for a
vory largo proportion of IMynu.Ma
uho'o Ulntuls nro continually in
cro.iiing i.i tliuir il m mil for manu
fact u rod good. Again hoaya: "Tho
Islands, with Australia, will open up
market moro tlun suluYieut to
absorb our Mirpltn production and
it nuwW no piophoi to nssuro us
that Hawaii will rosigu to Samoa
tho koy of tho maritimo dominion
of tho Pacilio.
Tho judgo pleaded for a forgetful
nets of tho thft committed by au
Amuricau Minister anil an American I
captain of tho navy. Ho aUo mado
assort ious in connect ion thorowith
which ho know no ouu believed in.
If tho American Government had
done as they did in Samoa insist
on tho restoration of tbo status quo
existing before tho theft, thoro might
bo forgotfulnorfs of wrongs. I wish
to call tho judge's attention to tho
seventh annual message of that '
great American General, Jackson.
The citation is too long for this
letter. I was nicro than surprisod
at tho judge's quoting ''Gloator's
Soliloquy," but it was very applica-
bio. It you remember at the time
of this supposed holilorpiy, Glostor
was studying the carrying out of a
policy which placed inm at the head
of all the crowned rascals and
scoundrels England has produced.
I will conclude with a part of
Hamlet's soliloq ty which in my
opiniou is more appropriate: "It is
bettor to bear the ills mo know than
lly'to others that wo know not."

For tho benefit of tho Honolulu
public something should bo done as
regards tho running of busses. Every
day wo see busses from different
companies leaving the terminus at
tho same time. This should be

interest and studied its roMilU aud
have come to tho couoIumou that
these buss lines should run on
schedule time, to suit and benefit
the pHssougere.
Mauy of us mechanics havo to go
to our d dly labor, places of busi
ness, etc., on time, aud wo csuuot

system. Now I, as one who lives
outsido tho city limits, aud one. who

benefit as regards tho running of
busses, on varriod schedule time.
