Dr. Hunt was born in Rochester,
N. Y., in 18K. lie arrived hero in

Seminary, ho came to Honolulu iu
1817 aurf preached in the Bethel dur
ing an absence of the Seamen's
Chaplain, Rev. S. C. Damon. Ho
also edited The Friend at tho same
time iu very vigorous stylo. Ho was
an able and forcible preacher. Ho
joined in the firH null from Hono
lulu to California in 1813 when gold
was discovered, yet not for tin sake
of gold, but to carry to thai wild
camp of adventurers the word of tho
Lord. Ho was at ouce uImmhi lihap
lain by tho new coiners of San Fran
cisco, i ho earliest Protestant minis
ter on tho California coast. Wheti

found the Gospel there before them

Ho then returned to the East and

wise, and faithful Christian minis
ter, of fine social qualities, and win
niug nature. Ho merits lasting re
mombrauco among the founders of
