HUAVE WITH GLASS,
Natives of Jamaica Uso Broken Bot
tle for Razors.
Tho natives of Jamaica havo no
iiphI to bur soap, for tho woodB
abound with plan's whoso leaves
and liuiln supply very well the placo
of that indispensable article, says
Pearson' Weekly. Among those is
the soap tree, so nailed, though it is
more a hush thau a tree. Its bulb,
when rubbed on wet clothes, makes
a beautiful lather, which smells
much like common brown soap.
1 he Jamaica negroes, some of them
who are gr-at dandies in their way,
make, a soap out of a cocoanut oil
aud homo 'made lye; and a fine soap
it is, smooth aud fragrant. This
cocoa nut. oil soap is used for shav
ing. When a man wishes to shave
he starts out with his cocoanut shell
cup and h's donkey-tail brii'h and
bottle. It is never any trouble to
Gud au empty bottle in Jamaica,
even iu the mountains. At leat
twenty generations of thirsty people
have lived thorp, and thrown away
the empty bottles. The man carries
no mirror, because he has none to
carry. Not one negro cabiu in a
dozen brn a cheap looking glass.
But nature supplies tho mirror as
well as the soap. The man goes to
a convenient pool iu tho mountain
stream, where the watr is still, ami
Ihre is his mirror. He break his
bottle on a stone and picks out a
good Miarp piece. Then he lathers
Ins face profusely ami logins to
scrape away with his piece of glass,
which works almost as well ai u
The men rarely cut thcni'dves iu
this operation. "'At first," says a
writer, ' I trembled for them," but
afterward I tried the method for
myelf, aud oou became almost au
expert at it."
Send a Car Load of Flowers.
Ex Lieutenant Governor John C. .
Underwood, of Kentucky, visited
Atlanta, Ga, lately for the purpose
of arranging for floral tributes to be
pent to Chicago on the occasion of
tho dedication of the confedeiato j
monument to bj unveiled iu Chicago
on the JtOth of May. The fund for !
the building of this monument wus
raided chieflv through the iustru- I
mentality of Colonel Underwood, a
prominent ex confederate soldier of
Kentucky. A car load of flowers
will bo ot from Savannah, and At
lanta, New Orleans aud other south
! eru cities wdl make contributions.
Now that the war of tho revolu
tion is oxer, it is tho duty of ovory
man to support the existing form of
government. Although things may
not move with that cordiality that
would ensure an everlasting peace,
still they may be allowed to subside
into that indifference without animo
sity that would allow either partv
to work out their hct interests. All
things considered it may be for tho
bet, but time, tho only arbitrator iu
