Remarkable Mountain Climbing by

Calcutta, April 11. A Bongal
sapper who was takun prisotior at

but escaped, reports that Mr. Hob
ertson, the lintioh Aout, who is
, shut up iu thu Chitrnl fort, made a
sortie recently, but was defeated

A dispatch from Simla,
noon t aday, nays that Col.
i commander of thu British
tilted
Kolly,
forcs
which havt, been attntnptitiK to
, roach Chitrnl, from Gilit, since
I March 25th, has succeedtd iu cross
I itiK tho Spaudar Pass, and was
about GO miles from Chitrnl on ttril
7. The march of tho troops was
most arduous and a most brilliant
military exploit. The Pas is 12,000
feet high, and is impassable to beasts
of burden, coutequently the pioneers
had to carry tho field aud mounted
guns during the last seven miles of
th route, through deep snow and
with the weather intensoly cold.
The troops suffered iu many cases
from frost bites.
When theso advices wore forward
ed to Simla the enemy was in pos
session 20 miles distant from tho
force commanded by Col. Kelly, and
an engagement was expected.

THE ARMENIAN MASSACRE.
Wero tho Storios of Atrocltina Only
Fabrications?
Thu Armenian committee linve
imported three refugees from tho
alleged massacres in Armenia, and
them worthies were received by Mr.
Gladstouo a fow days ago.
Tho Globu's correspondent in
Constantinople re-asserts that most
of the stories of Armenian horrors
havo been invented by interested
persons aud a report of tho propa
ganda of an organized political cam
paign against tho Porte. The
Speaker'H Constantinople represent
alive, who claims to speak on auth
ority, admits that Armenians iu S.is
soun rebelled iu 1893 and fought a
succustful battle with tho Kurds,
of whom thoT killed more than 200.
This is mentioned as showing tho
ground for tho expedition of tho
Kurds against tho Armenians in
181)1. The same correspondent at
tempts to vitiato the elToct of the
comim; report of tho Armunian com
mission of enquiry by asserting that
a mass of also testimony has been
furuiched. including that of three
priests, who were paid largo sumt
for their evidence, and that other
witnesses have been hired iu largo
numbers to swear to a long list of
atrocities committed by Armenians
upon Turks iu Moosh aud other
places near by.
TOKPEDO BOATS vs. IRONCLADS.
Lubouctaero Points Out tho Wunknoaa
of thuBlgShps.
I am not a naval expert, hut tho
action of the Japanese at Wei-hai-wei
seems to show that if a torpedo
strikes an ironclad down goes the
iron-clad. Torpedo-boats, being
smaller, can maneuver quicker than
iron dads. During a naval battle,
when all is smoke, it looks, there
fore, as though tho iron-clads ou
both sides would be sunk by tho torpedo-boats.
If subinarino torpodo
boats are rendered possible, this
probability would lm groatly in
creased. All t his points to tho possi
bility of a fresh revolution in naval
warfare, which would make huge ar
mored ships no better than baskets
iu which too many eggs htvo been
put. lAndon Truth.

National Cane Shredder
PATENTER UNDER THE LAWS OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
Mr. John A. Scott. Munuirer of tho
lug wonderful record of tho working of tho NATIONAL OANE SHRED-
DEll, which was erected by their works ut the commencement of tho crop
i just harvested:
I "During tho tmst week tho Hilo Huunr Gointmnv's mill exceeded anv of
its former records by closing' the 125 hours grinding with an output of 300J
tons. This is fully 10 percent more than the best work of former years.
"The three rollor mill being 20 in. by 64 in. and tho two roller mill 30 iu.
by CO in. '1 ho first mill doing this amount of work in an efficient mannor
nnd with great case, compared with work on whole cane, owing to thorough
preparation of tho cano by tho National Cano Shredder, recently erected by
mo uomiiuiiy.
" And by its uso tho extraction has been increased from 3 percent to 6 por
I cent on all kinds of cane, and in somo cases 80 percent has been reached;
tho avcrngo being 75 to 78 percent, according to quality.
"1 continue to linil the megass from shrouded cane butter fuel than from
whole cane.
"Tho shredder hus been working day and night for seven mouths and has
given mo entire satisfaction, having shredded during that time about soventy
thousand tons of cano, aud a large part of it being hard ra toons.
"Tho shredder and engine require very little care or attention."
fHPlaiui and speoillcalions of these Shredders may bo seen at tho oillcool
