Challenger Vftlkyrie III Now Being
Tho romarkablo performances of
the Ailea in tho Moditprrauoan inako
it doubtful whother Valkyrie HI.,
tho challenger built by the njncll-
caln headed by tho Earl of Dun-
ravou, will come to tbes waters to
compete for tho America's Gup. It
all depends upon the results of tho
I races in tho Clyde. Thon we shall
discover whether Wa(son or Fifo
has built the bettor boat. Lord
, Dunraveu has proved lilmnelt suck
I an oxcellout sportsman, and is so
well known nnn liked in this coun
try, that the majority of Americans
would regret to hear that Valkyrie
III. was not to bo the challenger.
The Valkyrie is not yet finished.
IIoroYorbangs are long, but not ex
coseive: ana tho outline of the
stoin, though more elongated than
the BritanuiaV. retains tho charac
teristic rounti-up forward which
Watson always uses, and which is
always distinguishable from the
straight er Hues of Herreshoff and
Fife. She is not such an extreme
boat as the Ailsa, is narrower and
has a good deal more draught. The
Ailrn's sides flare out all the way up
to tho dock. Thoso of Valkyrio III.
run up straighter from the turn of
the bilge, though at no portion is
thero auything approaching a tum
ble home. II or underwater body is
of a more pronounced iin-koel shspo
than anything that Watson has yet
done. Still, it is apparont that her
displacement will considerably ex
ceed thnt of tho Ailsa.
It is reported from Glasgow that
great interest i'b taken there in re
gard to tho skipper of tho new
yacht. Her designer does not want
her to be handled by Captain Gran
field, who sailed Valkyrie II., as ho
is reported to have lost his nerve.
Mr. Watson is anxious that Lord
Duuraven should secure tho ser
vices of Captain Carter, who is cap
tain of tho Britannia. Now that the
Princo of Wales' yacht has been
beaten by tho Ailta, and it is rumor
ed that the royal owner is anxious
to sell her, tho probabilities are that
Cartor will bo engaged. It is tho
ganeral opinion that Carter as steor
and Willie Jameson as sailing mas
ter would form tho very best com
bination that could be made in
England, if not. in the world.
Negotiations have been opened
with the Midland Spinning Co., of
Longoation, Derbyshire, for the sup
ply of Valkyrio III. with rope rig
ging and some, if not all, of her
sails, to bo mado from ramie fiber
by tho Boyle process. It is said to
be double the strength and half the
weight of ordinary rope and canvas.
Tho weight of tho Valkyrio's main
sail would bo a ton and a half if
mado from ramie fiber by tho usual
process, but mado by tho above pro
cess (and of ramie fiber) it will
weigh less than one ton and bo five
times stronger than if made of cot
ton The Illiulrated American.
Ministerial Scheme of Hoforin.
Tho Ministerial Ausociation of
Milwaukee is working up a plan for
Sunday reform which includes the
stopping of everything in the shape
of work or amurement on Sunday.
A general committeo is, to be "elect
ed and from it are to be mado up
committees to put an end to Sunday
games, theaters and excursions, and
to close saloons end all other places
of business that arnopou on Sunday.
TJie committee will also endeavor to
stop the runuing of street cars on
Sunday. By agrevmeut drug stores

and then for tho sole purpose of dis
Should bo used in attempting to
cure that very disagreeable disease,
catarrh. As catarrh originates in
impurities in tho blood, local appli
cations cau do no permanent good.
Tho common sense method of treat
ment is to purify the blood, and for
this purpose there is no preparation
superior to Hood's Sarsaparilla.

reatorincr luiristaltio action of the

National Cane Shredder
PATENTED UNDER THE LAWS OF THE HAWAIIAN 18LAND8.
Mr. John A. Scott, Manager of tho Hilo Sugar Company, gives tho follow
ing wonderful record of tho working of tho NATIONAL OANE SHRED
DER, which was erected by their works at tho commencement of tho crop
"During tho past week the Hilo Sugar Company's mill exceeded any of
its forme records by closing tho 125 hours grinding with an output of 300J
tons. This is fully 10 percent moro than the best work of former years.
"Tho three roller mill being 20 in. by 54 in. Hnd the two roller mill 30 la.
by GO in. 1 he first mill doing this amount of work in an efficient manner
and with great oaso, compared with work on wholo cane, owing to thorough
preparation of tho cano by tho National Cano Shredder, recently erected by
" And by its usa the extraction has been increased from 3 percent to 5 per
cent on all kinds of cane, and in some cases 80 percent has been reached;
tho average being 75 to 78 percent, according to quality.
" I continue to find tho mrgass from shredded cano better fuel than from
"Tho shredder has been working day und night for coven months and has
given mo entire satisfaction, having shredded during that timo about seventy
thousand tons of cano, and a' largo part of it being hard raloons.
"The shredder and encino rcciuirc very litllo caro or attention."
