fail to b- enchanted with the kalei

For those simply in search of the
beauties of nature tbe best plan
would be, in my opinion, to approach
the pass from the Leilehua ranch
and, having left their horses at ono
of the small farms situated in a
gulch at the base of the mountains,
to t raver o tho pass on foot. If you
bring your horse he is apt to claim
too much of your attoution, the
climb being a very tortuous and
somewhat laborious one. There are
no public houses of accommodation
for the traveler, but Louis Warren,
tho enterprising and energetic man
ager of tho Mikilua ranch, and his
amiable spouse, dispense true Ha
waiian hospitality in a manner that
makes you feel at once at your per
fect ease. Tho otherwiso ubiquitous
mosquito is here conspicuous by his ,
absence. On the last occasion I
slept capitally in an unprotected
bed without hearing or feeling ouo
single specimen of this pest.
I have thought this matter wor-'
thy of some little attention, for the
reason that I have met quite a num
ber of kamaainas, who are barely j
aware of tho existence of this pass, j
and because I have never seen it do- ,
picted nn canvas, photographs or in
type. Here is a gratuitous tip to
our local artists, whether of the
brush or camera.
Now that tho war of tho revolu
tion is ovor, it is the duty of every
man to support tho existing form of
government. Although things may
not move with that cordiality that
would ensure an everlasting peace,
still they may be allowed to subside
into that indifference without animo
sity that would allow either party
to work out their best interests. All
things considered it may be for the
best, but time, the only arbitrator in
such cases, must alone decide 'that
