Over the Discovery of a Case of
Leprosy on a Whito Man.
A late QucoDRlaud paper says a
white man named John Brown has
been pronounced to be a trno leper,
and he hm been sent to tho lazaret
at Dunwich. The uufortunato fol
low stalos that he enjoyed good
health until seven years ago, when
he began to oxporiouco in two Angers
a peculiar feeling, which gradually
spread up his forearm, causing great
pain. Four or five years ago his
face became swollen. Tho lobes of I
his ear wore enlarged, and blisters
appeared in various parts of his
body, especially in his fingers and
toes, and other parts of his hands
and foot. The blisters stopped
whon they wero pricked. Brown
served four years in tho Royal Navy
as a marino on tho Mediterranean
station, visiting Constantinople,
Malta, Gibraltar, Syracuse and
ports in North Africa, but bo says
he never came into contact with '
lepers, lie left Euglaud in 1869 in
the Flying Squadron, and settled in '
Victoria, chiefly at Ballarat. Ho
camo to Queensland in 1871, and
worked nearly all his time on tho
northern goldfields. lie had novor
contorted with Chinamen.
Jumped Overboard.
Captain Patterson of tho harbor
polico had quite an exciting chaso
this morning. A mail named Sam
Shaw jumped overboard from tho
Bteamer Mariposa and swam ashore.
Some of the men on tho steamer
were in with Shaw aud supplied him
with dry clothing. It was not until
some time afterward that Captain
Patterson got on to the man's sud
den departure. Ho was standing
at the lime in an alleyway near
Bruno' cooper shop. Patterson tele
phoned for an ofilcer and ono soon
arrived. Shaw on seeing the oQlcers
started for tho lumber yard but was
not quick enough to oludo arrest, j
Shaw was taken to tho station amf i
kept thero until 11:30 o'clock when j
ho was taken on board and is now
on his way to the Coast.

National Cane Shredder
PATENTED UNDER THE LAWS OF THE HAWAIIAN IKLANDH.
Mr. John A. Scott, Manager of the Hilo Sugar Company, gives the follow
ing wonderful record of tho working of the NATIONAL CANE SHRED
DER, which was elected by their works ut the commencement of tho crop
just harvested:
" During tho pusl week tho Hilo Sugur Company's mill exceeded any of
its former records by closing tho 125 hours grinding with an output of 300)
tons. This is fully 10 percent nioro than tho best work of former years.
"The three roller mill being 26 in. by 51 in. and the two roller mill .10 in.
by GO in. '1 he first mill doing this amount of work in un efficient manner
and with great easo, compared with work on whole cane, owing to thorough
preparation of tho cano by tho National Cane Shredder, recently erected by
the Company.
"And by its mo the extraction has boon increased from 3 percent to 5 per
cent on all kinds of cane, and in some catcs 80 percent has been reached;
tho avcrago being 75 to 78 percent, according to quality.
" I continuo to find the tnogasa from shredded cune better fuel thau from
wholo cano.
"Tho shredder has been working day and night for seven months and has
given mo entire satisfaction, having shredded during that time about seventy
thousand tons of cane, and a largo part of it being hard ratoous.
"Tho shredder and cimino require very lilllo c.iro or attention."
