A Dream of the Future.
Within ton year, it is said, tbe ,
city of Now York will bo heatod and
lighted, havoall its machinery driven,
and its laborious work dom, by the
utilization of the forces of tho Nia-
gara Falls. Tho idoa has long boon i
a dream. But two dilllculties have i
l always stood in tho wy first, tho '
purely mechanical obstacles to turn-
lug any part of so strong a curront
into olectrical energy, and, secondly,
I tho impossibility of proGtably con- I
I voying electricity any groat distance
J from the place whoro it is generated, j
Tho Gret of those has been ovor-
i come, and there nro now on both
sidos of tho Falls great works in
I course of erection that will gouerate,
betweon them, electricity equivalent
j to three-quarters of a million horse-
fiower. wnat tnis moans may oe
udged from the fact that, a few
years ago, it was officially estimated
that all tho machinery in Nw York
Stato only amounts to 450000 horse
poor. The problem of trAnsmissiou
is a more serious one. Tho highly elu
sive character of electricity causes it
to escape at every possible point, in
spite of tho most careful insulation.
Mr. Nicholas Tela, Edison's young
rival, believes he has at last hit on a
plan by which electricity can bo con
veyod several hundred miles without
appreciable loss. If this problem
of transmission is really overcomo,
Now Yorkers and others will, it is
said, have tho forces of Niagara laid
on their houses for everyday uu at
a cost of los than ( each horse
power a year. Ex.

National Cane Shredder
PATENTED UNDER THE LAWS OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
Mr. John A. Scott, Manager of the Hilo Sugar Company, gives the follow
ing wonderful record of the working of the NATIONAL CANE SHRED
DER, which was erected by their works at the commencement of tho crop
"During the past weok tho Hilo Sugar Company's mill exceeded any of
its former records by closing the 125 hours grinding with an output of 300
tonB. This is fully 10 percent more than the best work of former years.
"The thrco roller mill being 2G in. by 54 in. and the two roller mill 30 in.
by GO in. '1 ho first mill doing this amount of work in an efficient manner
and with great ease, compared with work on whole cane, owing to thorough
preparation of tho cano by the National Cane Shredder, recently erected by
"And by its use tho extraction has been lncrcat-cd from 3 percent to 5 per
cent on all kinds of cane, and in eomo caecs 80 percent has been reached ;
tho averago boing 75 to 78 percent, according to qunlity.
"I continue to find tho megass from shredded cuuo better fuel than from
"Tho shredder has been working day and night for soven months and has
given me entire satisfaction, having shredded during that time about soventy
thousand tons of cane, and a largo part of it being hard ratoons.
"The shredder and encino require very little care or attention."
