HOW "WOMEN LUNOH.
Whon Thoy Are Downtown on Shop
"I suppose no mau ought to com
plniu of that which puts mono? in
his pocket," remarked a well-known
doctor to mo the other day, "and
therefore it is not a matter that I
am going to movo hoaron and earth
to reform, but at tho same time I
don't mind giving anybody tho bene
fit of my opinion that tho lunch
parlors that have sprung up in the
shopping districts have been pro
ductive of much dyspepsia among
women, especially that class whom
I might call 'chronic shoppers.' But
that such is tho case is, of course,
purely the fault of the women them
selves, who persist in gorging them
selves on pies and cakes and meriu-
, gues and creams and puffs, and all
manner of concoctions that are pre-
i pared with an eye single to their
capacity for tickling the palate,
' without regard to their digestive
"It is a fact which ha brought
many dollars to my pocket that
, when it comes to ordering what they
call a light lunch most women will
order tho very things that they
ought most to avoid. Instead of
the plain and wholesomo they will
choose the variegated and bilious.
They are much worse sinners than
men in this respect. Where a man
would take a ham or tongue sand
wich, a woman, nine times out of
ton, would select, by way of a starter,
a cream puff or a tart, or some in
digestible compound with a 'high
falutiu' name. Though at home
they feed with tome regard to tho
eternal fituofs of things, when on
these 'luncheon orgies,' as I call
them, wo in en seem to abaudon them
selves to a reckless desire to gratify
their tastes, utterly regardless of
tho pains and penalties which it
entails on their stomachs. Every-
, thing goes sweet and sour viands,
hot and cold fluids, light and solid
compounds, without any regard to
natural order and precedence.
"There is something earning, toe,
that is going to make matters worse.
That is tho 'rapid transit lunch,' for
women in tho shopping district, as
1 we have it in the downtown business
districts for mon. Then when wo
rneu have simply to stretch out their
bauds to get whatever tempts their
appetites most, and in an atmos
phere where fast feeding is conta
gious, many will soon fall to wonder
ing what makes them so cross and
irritable, and their husbands will be
racking their brains for excuses for
staying out late more frequently
But as a doctor with a keen appro-
. ciation of the good things that
money will buy, the prospect is one
that I can at least regard with philo
sophical resignation." New York
Now that the war of the rovolu- '
tion is over, it is the duty of every
man to support the existing form of
government. Although things may
not move with that cordiality that
would ensure an everlasting peace,
still they may be allowed to subsido
into that indifference without animo
sity that would allow either party
to work nut their best interests. All
things considered it may be for the
best, but time, the only arbitrator in
such caes, must aloue decido that
