stratagem. Ho wont to tho tele.'

asked the clerk at tho central office,
at a given signal, to speak into the
, instrument tho following words, in

I "Istuo Smeliauski, you must con
fess tho robbery; if you don't you
I aro suro to be suntenced, and your

I sovoro."
Ho then sent for tho prisoner and
questioned him again, threatening j
to appeal to tho "machino" to got &t '
tho truth. The thief hero burst
into a laugh, but tho inspector hold
tho tolephouo to his ear and gavo
the precoucortod signal. Tho result
was as expected. The rogue, terri
fied by tho warning uttered by tho
uncanny "machine," at onco made a
clean breast of it. Exchange
