Xho Way Navul EUquetto Salutes
Must Bo Mtido.
Ot all profession?, tlio navy is the
most jealous as far as salutes and
cerotnotiies are concerned, and it
tuay not bo amiss to enumerate a
few of tho marks of respect both '
paid to and received by ships. )
On a vessel outoriug a foreign '
port tho Hag of tho country is first ,
nalutod, and if thoro are any mou-of- j
war present, each one is saluted in
turu. After tho salutes come the
visits paid by the officers of the
various ships (.bound by the service '
regulations): juniors call on the j
soniors, who return it within the
twenty-four hours. '

A curious form of salutation, for
which there appears to be no author
ity, is what is termed "piping the
side." This is accorded to flag and
commanding officers, and also the
liou tenant for guard duties. " Pip
ing" is done by a boatswain's mate,
who "winds his call" on these officors
entering or leaving tho vessel. The
only others entitled to it are corpses?

consignment to tho deop, or when
lauded for burial ashore.
Boat salutes are frequently puzz
ling to an uufortuutte middy in
charge of a cutter about to pas a
senior officer; they are iudeed per
ploxing to one uninitiated. In a
pulling boat the officer, on passiug
ono of higher rauk, perhaps salutes
by touching his cap, or his men may
have to "lay ou" or "toss" their oars;
and, again, in a sailing boat, tho offi
cers, besides saluting, may have to
riiicct tho sheets to be "let fly;"
while in a steam launch tho ougiues
are ''eased" or "stopped," corre
sponding to tho ''laying ou" aid
"tossing" oars of a pulling boa.
Till quite recently, tho naval sa
lute wis effected by raising tho cap,
but now it is made more in conform
ity with the military idea of respect,
aud though, at first, some grumbled
at tho notiou of imitating the "grab
bios" their red-coated brethren it
is now universally admittod to be a

groat improvement ou the old style.
This salute is always made ou meet
ing or passing a senior, going ou
board a ship, stepping on to the
quarter-deck, and other occasions
too uuruorous to moutiou. J r.ffil
Social intercourse between senior
and junior officors in the navy is not
the eame as in a regimeut. It can
not be, the exigencies of tho servico
will not permit of it; but instead of
the familiarity which breeds con
tempt, a feeling of mutual respect
grows up, engendered by the strict
enforcement of naval etiquette, and
whioln constitutes a bond so strong
between officers aud men that all
our great naval victories can bo
traced to it. Enyliah aper.
