Somo month's ago Mr. Selano,
tho agent of tho Overland Month
ly, was in those islands, soliciting
topical artiolcs and patronage for
that magazine. Ho was of plons
ant address and n ado friends of
pooplo with whom ho camo in
contact. In consoquence he re
ceived many courtosica and muoh
holp in pursuing tho objecta of
his visit. Ho wont away woll
pleased with his rooeption iu
thesa islands.
A story comes from Kona,
Hawaii, however, which would
indicate that Mr. Selano whilo
visiting Kailua badly abusod
his hospitable reception. Ho
was admitted to the country
residence of tho lato King
Kalakaua there, which now bo
longs to Quoon Dowagor Kapio
lani, on paying the native man in
charge a dollar or two. W. N.
Armstrong, a momber of tho
Labor Commission, who was on
his tour of Hawaii, is said to havo
accompanied Mr. Selano in his
inspection of the house.
When Mr. Selano came out of
tho house he was carrying a valise
that ho did not havo whon he en
tered. This fact becoming known
an investigation was mado, the
Queen Dowagor going from Hono
lulu to Kailua for the purpose.
It was found that a valiio
bearing on it tho nanio
of " Victoria Kamamalu," tho
3uoen of Kamehamoha V. who
ied in England, was missing.
With this valued heirloom of tho
lato King's housohold had also
disappeared a number of Kala
kaue'i letters.
It was a prominent lady of Ho
nolulu, who was visiting Kailua
at the time, who apprised the
Queen Dowager of tuo not of
spoliation. Tho Queon Dowager
took her nephew, David KaWana
nakoa, with her to Kailua 'to in
vestigate the matter and found it
to bo in accordanco with the fore
going statement. If Mr. Arm
strong, an official of the Hawaiian
Government, saw tho transaction
and kept quiot about it, ho 1b
placed in a rather unenviable
light, and should bo asked for an
explanation by tho Government.
Mr. Armstrong is now in Japan
on Government business. . Tho
story without names has gone to a
San Frunoisco daily paper by a
rocont mail.
