Editok Bulletin: The coffeo
pluntors in Kona want to know by
what right tho wiseacres of Hilo
presume to lay down tho law to
tin Kona people as to how and
whore tho freight coming from
Honolulu to Kona is to bo funded.
If tho Ililoitcs in their giant
strength daro to sot at defiance
tho Botird of Health authorities
at Honolulu and tnako rulos and
regulations for thotnRolvos, well
and good, but the folks living in
this obscure part of tho land tail
to soo by what authority tho liilo
people should pass laws for Kona.
Wo havo no intercourse with the
other Bido of tho island, and if the
fear-stricken Hiloitos euro to do
so, they are wolcome to placo us
many guards as they liko to pro
vont pcoplo from entering thoir
holy district from tho Humukua
and Puna onds, Tho Konaitos,
howovor, would profor to arraugo
as to the landing and fumigating
of freight thomsolvos.
Tho idea of selecting Kaawaloa
as tho discharging and fumigating
point for freight in Kona is ab
surd. That landing is certainly
in tho middle of tho Kona district
and may suit Mr. Paris, who is I
believe local Board of Hoalth
agent, but it is far away from tho
most important ports of Kona.
Tho mnss of froinht in Kona is
handled atKuilua in North Kona.
and Hookena in South Kona, and
it would bo oasier to fumigato
froight at thoso placos than at
tho desolato noint ut tho foot of
Koalukokua pali, where hardly a
boat load of fioight is evor landed.
It is very hard to compol pooplo
to como as far as 30 miles to Kaa
waloa, ovor tho rough tracks wo
havo hero, and to have to pack
back all our rico and other sup
plies ovor tho samo distance The
Kaawaloa rackot may suit Mr.

In Collision With n AVlinlo.
The 8-mnsted schooner Handa
Islo, which arrived in Sydney
yesterday from Morcnry Buy with
a freight of kauri, had a narrow
oscapo from being sunk by a
whalo on August 24. Two whales
woro sighted mnking a oruieo
whon quito oloso they altered thoir
courso, and made right for tho
vos8ol. Ouo of tho whales dived
under tho sohoouor, but tho other
hold right on and crashed into
her abuft tho mainmast, a little
below tho water-lino, The vessel
trembled as if sho had bpon struck
by a ram and shook in evory tim
bor, Tho whalo rebounded from
tho shock, smothering tho wator
round with blood, and eventunlly
sank out of sight. Sevoral planks
wore startou, ana the vessel leak
ed so badly that tho deck cargo
was jettisoned in order to bring
tho sourco of the loak above the
water-line. The injured planks
woro then covered with pillows
enclosed in greonhide, and kept
in position by wiro ropes passed
round tho bottom. This had the
desired effect, and a couple of
hours' pumping eaoh day enabled
tho leak to be kept uudor. Aus
