"Waste Not, Want Not."
Hoit n Hnllur on ttio ISnrk Mohican
In talking with n Bulletin re
porter yosterday in regard to tho
troubles 'botweeoii tho cdr)tninB
and mates of merchant vessels
with thoir crows, Consul-Qonoral
Mills dotailod his oxporioncos with
ono of tho mon who camo hero on
tho bark Mohican a short timo
since Tho man took sick a day
or two boforo tho arrival of tho
vessel at this port, and tho day
after tho man was sent to tho hos
pital by tho captain with tho con
currence of tho Consul. Tho cap
.tain had tho option of paying the
man off by giving him an addi
tional month's pay. but being
shorthanded and thinking tho man
would get hotter kept him in tho
hospital at theoxpousoof tho ship.
This went on for twenty-eight
days at an expense to tho owners
oE Si.oU unily, and tuo mans
wages of courso still running on.
Tho man would appear to get
' bettor for a day or two and thou
worse, but all tho timo protending
to bo anxious to got back to tho
ship. On tho morning of tho
vossol'a departure tho captain and
Consul decided it was best to pay
tho man off, which was dono; Tho
man was notified and was willing,
and tho captain loft about $90 in
tho Consul's hands for him as
soon as ho was ablo to got out of
tho hospital, together with his dis
charge papers. At that timo tho
man claimed to bo so sick that ho
was unablo ovou to turn over in
bed and too feoblo ovon to sponge
off his faco. About two hours
aftorwards tho man appeared at
tho Consul's office and demanded
his nionoy. Tho Consul said:
uWJiy, I thought you wore too
sick to move?" "So I was," said
tho man, "as long aB tho
ship paid my hospital bill,
but I ain't fool enough to
pay $1.50 a day out of my own
money. Give mo my pay."
Tho Consul told tho man to
wait a few minutes while ho wrote
a lottor. Ho then tapped his boll,
sealed tho noto and ordered his
messenger to deliver it at onco.
Tho note was addressed to tho
police captain on duty and re
quested tho immediato presonco
of a policeman. Tho officer of
tho law soon appeared and the
Consul then said: ''Take this
man on board tho Mohican imme
diately and give this lottor to tho
captain." The order was obeyed,
.for instead of tho Mohican leav
ing at tho appointed timo sho was
four hours lato in getting away.
If tho man had waited two hours
longor Mr. Mills would have
had to pay him, but as it was
ho cancelled tho discharge
papers, sent tho money in a
lottor to the captain, at the same
timo tolling him tho circumstances
and advising him to let tho San
Francisco Shipping Commission
ers determine as to whether tho
man should not bo forced to pay
tho hospital bill, as it was evident
ho had been shamming for a
That is tho last Consul Mills
has heard of tho man, but ho
thinks ho will givo Honolulu a
wide berth hereafter. "And this
is only ono of many such cases,"
said tho Consul.
