snmo for adoption, beg leave to
roport as follows:
With tho permission of the Ex
ecutive wo gavo public notico in
tho nowspap-jrs thnt there would
bo an open competition, nnd thnt
a prize of fifty dollars would be
paid to tho competitor whose de
signs for a Great Seal would bo
adopted by tho Legislature. In
pursuanco of said notico twenty
boveu different designs wore sub
mitted to us and wo havo carefully
examined them and considered
their respectivo merits. We have
concluded to recommend for adop
tion tho design submitted under
lie noin do plume "Anglo-Dimo,"'
that being in our opinion the mot-t
meritorious and constituting a
linmiboino and appropriate design
for n Great Seal.
A description of tho design, to
gether a itli a key to tho technical
tonne therein used, is hereto at
tached. Tho explanation of the design,
ns furnished by tho designer, is,
substantially as follows:

dawned upon Hawaii with tho ad
vent of tho Republic, wliilo the
fabulous bird Pluenix represents
Hawaii Noi rising rejuvenated
from tho ashos of tho Monarchy.
Finally, tho kalo nnd bannna
leaves and forns aro suggestive of
tho fruitfiilnoss of tho soil nnd
tho tropical vorduro of tho coun
try. As to tho department seals, wo
are of tho opinion that thoy
should bo of uniform design, and
wo think that tho design now used
by tho Interior Department is
suitable and well adapted for the
purpose-. "Wo therefore recom
mend that that design bo adopted
by 'tho Oopartmonts of Foreign
Affairs, Finance and tho Attornoy
Gonornl as well as tho Interior
Department, but inserting in oach
respectively tho proper depart
ment namo.
Wo transmit horowith tho de
signs for tho Great Koal which
wero recoivod by us and also tho
design for tho Department Seals
which wo havo recommended. Ex
tra copios of tho recommended
desigus will be laid upon the
desks of each member of tho
Legislature. , .
Wo also submit horowith a joint
resolution, embodying our recom
mendations, which wo hopo will
bo concurred in by both nouses.

Committee.
