ed it (baptism) as a non-essential."
A Joint debato -was pro
posed on tho subject of "immor-'
sion" (Star, March 17). I said of
that subject (immersion) that it
wis ono "which most of tho ablest
minds and best mou of tho chris
tian world doom a non-essontial."
I object to your correspondent
trying to fasten upon mo his un
derstanding of tho word "immer
sion." Tho effort to provo that I
am not in sympathy with the
church to which 1 belong is also
a mistake Tho Mothodists in
common with tho Lutherans,
and tho llomau
Catholics hold that "Tho manner
in which tho water is applied to
tho baptised is a matter of indif
ference." ("Winer's Confessions
of Christendom). They reject tho
dogma that immersion iB tho ex
clusive fohm of baptism; holding
after a careful, critical, conscien
tious study of tho Bible that
sprinkling and pouring fulfil
equally well tho Biblical require
ments as to baptism henco im
mersion as only ono of tho three
forms could bo dispensed with,
or was a "non-essontial." In tho
abovo mentioned churches, I hold,
will bo found "most of tho ablost
minds and best men of tho chris
tian world."
