Tho Sau Francisco Board o
Supervisors decided sotno timo
ago to put up a now strucTufo'Tbr
a Oriminnl Building and Morgue
on the" corner o Koarny and Mor-
ohant Btroeta. Corupotitivo de
signs wore callod for, prizes offor
etf and n comhiittco appointed
to decide on tho best. The coiibo- l
lation prizes to defeated candi
dates nmouuted to S1C00. Tho
committoo reported on March 9th
that tho plans of Mr.W. O. Banks
of tho firm of Copolaud, Piorco & I
Banks woro tho successful compa-1
titors and they recommonded that .
SV. O. Banks bo tho architect. Wo '
present herewith tin illustration of
tho succossful design a liich will
givo faintly an idea of Mr. Banks'
work. It is interesting locally
from tho fact that Mr. Banks' firm
designed tho original plans and
drow up tho specifications for tho
now on Ilolt block recently
completed in this city. Plans
were also drawn by 0. B. Bipley
which woro afterwards chauged
to resoinblo in many respects
thoso of Mr. Banks' firm. Tho
specifications and plans of Mr.
Banks' firm woro unusually
detailed and overything about
them wbb so clearly and distinctly
stated and defined that no diffi
culties could ariso in figuring on
them or any disputes ariso in tho
future as to what tho contract
called for. Such elaborate work
and attention to dotail is not usual
in thi" city to bo niado on pre
liminary plans as Mr. Banks' linn
furnished and would, no doubt, if
it had been practisod,havo obviated
ru any of tho numerous lawsuits
und loa&'es to contractors and
material men which havo occurred
in the past. From their success
in San Francisco it is evident
their excellent work in this lino
is veil appreciated there, as
thoy arc an old establish
ed firm with the highest
reputation. It is evident that
attention to these niattors would
not only givo more satisfaction
to contractors and ovory one con
cerned at a much less cost, but
would no doubt result in moro
modern buildings and improve
ments, and it is certain that San
Francisco architects attend strict
ly to tho architect end of tho busi
ness and do not compote with
contractors on their end of tho
business. It is a pity wo haven't
a competing firm of architects
hero, tiutli tor the benefit of pro
perty owners and for tho building
tradus. But owing to tho nearness
of San Francisco those who desiro
can, no doubt, when necessary
avail tuomsolves of tho services of
Mr. Banks' firm to their own re
sulting bonofit. It is well, perhups,
to mention that these plans were
drawn to the order of Mr. F. Har
rison, tho wollkuown contractor
n.ud builder, and uudor his direc
tions, and ho vouches for the fact
that Messrs. Banks, Copoland &
Piorco have furnished other plans
equally as satisfactory as that re
ferred to. This in itself is a suffi
cient guarantee of tho excellence
of Messrs. Banks, Copoland &
Pierce's work. Mr. Harrison will
be very glad at any timo to furn
ish all particulars requirod to
anyone desiring to build or wish
ing anything furnished in that
lino. It may be added that tho
Sun Francisco firm horo mention
ed does not employ either Chinese
or Japanese
or ivrr:itj:sr to siui'i-uts.

Forborne months Inst year I stiffened acute pain3 in my chest, "which altnobt nightly compelled
