' Totlio Editor of "Tho Exam
inor" Sir: Tho inclosed lottor
has boon rend by so innny peoplo
..with so much ovideutiutorest that
I thought porhaps it might in
.4oroat.aonioJo;.your roadors,, ,.
Tho hvntor of it litis traveled
ovor nearly tho whole world, and
has boon five years in America
and Mexico, and loft San Fran
cisco 18 years ago, and I consider
his judgment good.

JoiiANNKsnuna (Transvaal),-
South Afiuoa, Jan 27,1895.
Dear Sir: 1 am in receipt of
your lottor inquiring about tho
condition of things in your lino
in this city.
I handedy6ur letter to abrothor
of my employers, who has one of
tho best tailoring shops in tho city,
and asked him wliat reply I should
give you. Ho knows tho country
thoroughly, and is in ovory way
reliable. His advice is to stay
whore you aro. Tho wages now
are down to tho amount you arc
now gotting $30. They -will
probably go lowor in a year or
two.
. You can easily understand that
tho clays of very high wages have
gono forever, when I mention that
thoro aro now three lines of rail
way running into this town from
different soa-ports, and that tho
people have boon coming in at tho
rate of about 1,000 a month from
Europe, America and Australia.
Tho country, of course, has had
a big Bot-back through tho lato re
volt, and it may take months to
recovor.
I may mention that clothing is
not so high hero as in San Fran
cisco. But tho United States is
tho dearest country in tho world,
I think
This is going to bo a groat coun
try, but that thoro will bo terrible
upheavals sooner or later is tho
opinion of most peoplo who know
tho country woll. Tho Butch aro
in tho majority in South Africa,
but tho natives warlike Zulus
mostly will probably bo tho dif
ficulty. Thoro aro a million of
them in tho Transvaal alone.
Few peoplo come hero to settlo
and colonize, as in Australia.
Still this is a richer gold coun
try probably than California has
been, and Johannesburg, though
dry, dusty, and in a situation in
no way attractive, will in a few
years have a largor population
than San Francisco.
For ono with capital there are,
of course, opportunities that only
new countries afford. Respoct-

are tliey from tliclr employe, but they aro
faetB from truttiful and grateful peoplo, who
are reliable and as worthy of confidence as 11
they came from your most trusted neighbor.
Hood's Pim.s are tho best family cathartic
nd liver medicine. Harmless, reliable, sure.
