sented a substitute bill embodying
ecvoral amendments suggested by
members in former discussions.
It was the souse of tlio coinmitteo
that instead of a subsidy of S1G0,
000 asked by tlio Pacific Cablo
Company, a New York corpora
tion, tlio Government should not
liolp it in a greater sum than
- $100,000 n year for twenty years,
if any agreement was mado, and
Government business should bo
done fioo for all time. Bennett's
bill fixed tho rates for private
business at 61.25 per word for
China and Japan and !J5 eonts for
Hawaiian Islands, with press
rates at one-fonrth of these figures.
The cfmpiny has nbandound its
intention to try and ppcuvp a mid
ocean station on tho Marshall Isl
ands, which aro under control of
tho Gorman Government, and lias
fixed upon tho Midway Islands,
which aro uuinhabited, and bo-
loug to tho United States.

known Pacific Coast hotel man,
formerly of tho Baldwin Hotel,
and for a year past of Tho Port
land, in Oregon's metropolis, is

told a curious aud interesting
story anent tho doath and burial
of Joseph Tildon, formorly mana
gor of tho Baldwin Hotel and a
member of the Bohemian Club,
who went to Honolulu as man
ager of tho Eoyal Hawaiian Hotel,
and passed away in 188d Tildou's
body was laid sido by sido with
George H. Fassott, who hud also
boon managor ol tlio uaiuwm and
of tho Eoyal Hawaiian, and who
died but four months bo
foro him. Recently Mr.
Tildon's brothor, who has boon a
inqrohant in India for many years
and espouBod tho Buddhist faith,
arrived at Honolulu to visit the
gravo. Ho had not mot his
brother for oighteon years befoio
his death, and being engrossed
with business cares could not
possibly como to Honolulu. Ho
wont,us Mr. Lyons tells, and lived
with local Buddhists in Honolulu
while there Mr. Tildon lately
