!II 'aiine, Symptom anil llnuio
Treiitnif'iit.
Tho following nrtiolo is from
"Health Talks," in n California
paper, conducted by Dr. B. V.
-Burgess, son of N. F. Burgees' of.
Honolulu:
Muscular rheumatism is an in
flammatory affectiou of tho volun
tary muscles and is associated
with pain, tenderness and stiffness
of tho aff6otcd parts. As a rule it
is a diseaso of adult life and is
duoto oxposuroto cold, danipnosB,
draughts, or from excessive mus
cular strain.
Tho first attack is genflrnlly oE
an acuto nature and appears sud
denly with pain, tondorness, stiff
ness and difficulty in moving tho
affected part. One attack usually
proparos tho way for a second
and tho second for a third and so
on until one is so Btiff and full of
pain that they are unable to walk
about at all. Many are able to bo
about, by tho use of canes or
crutches, after tho attack has sub
sided; but how much better if ho
can throw off the troublo and be
ablo to go about without tho use
of crutches.
Pain may bo constant or only
noticed upon motion of tlio affect
ed part. If it is constant one will
find it more at night so that sleep
is next to impossible. In rheuma
tism of tho back (lumbago) pain
may bo very "evoro and motion of
any kind only tend to aggravate
it. To aviso from a stooping
.position is very difficult for one
who is thus affected.
Lumbago may bo accompanied
iby an acuto nttaok of sciaticaj at
which time tho patient's suffering
is agonizing indeed.
TREATMENT.
One of tho best treatments to
use at homo is to wring flannel
cloths from boiling water and ap
ply to tho affected parts. They
should bo roncwod every few
minutes until at least a dozen ap
plications have been made, after
which a brisk rubbing of the
parts, with alcohol oil, should bo
.resorted to. The alcohol I part)
and oil (5 parts) should bo ap
plied Jiot mid rubbed in thoronu"-
Hot poultices of ground flaxseed
meal or hops will bring relief and
should bo followed by the use of;
the aloohol and oil. Tho applica
tion should be used once a day for
several days, when tho pain will
have ceased.
Rest is very essential during
this time. Do not try to do any
work but gyve yourself up to get
ting ivell.
Drink 'argo quantities of hot
water morning, noon and night,
ono hour before eating and on go
ing to bed. This will increase tho
circulation and stimulate tho sys
tem iu general. It will wash tho
system of effete matorial by opon
ing tho kidneys and causing a froo
flow of urine.
Your diet for four weeks, at
loast, should consist of nothing
but beefsteak and hot water. Tho
beefsteak may bo broiled, ground,
baked, scraped or scrambled.
If it iB your desiro to bo entire
ly free of all rheumatic affection
follow the above directions to tho
very lottor and you will surely bo
blessed with tho disappearance of
your troublo.
