Tbe Nnlvntlou Army.
By Anne Mario Frtucolt.
Today wo tako up a carpenter's
pencil with which to build our
littlo sermon if you liko. AVo
havo boon interested all aloag in
the doings of tho "Salvation
Army" and more particularly
sinco mooting two of its captains
English women. Wo know that
the work of that army of Chris
tian mon and women is uuqunli
fiodly a powor for good wo ba
lievo it. But wo also believe, as a
certain writer says, "that thoro is '
only ono stablo foundation on
which tho ono church can stand,
viz., 'tho apostles and prophets,
with Josus (Jurist as the corner
stone.' "All other ground is
shifting Baud." And po it proves
with this "Army." And tho writer
goes on to say: "The Bplit in tho
Salvation Army is tho repetition
of tho history of all religious s.ects
formed by man. Tlioy aro Beets
formed by cutting up Christianity
info parts and destined thomBelves
to bo cut up. Sectarianism
has in itself tho essential olemont
of dissolution, that pormanoncy
can only belong to unity. But tho
chief niorit of tho Salvation Army
is, in tho messngo and admonition
it has brought to tho church."
Yes, as a humanitarian institu-
tion too much cannot bo said in
its praise. But with all its groat
good parts and tho good parts of
sects in gonoral and in particular,
those special roligious bodies
everywhere bodies of Christians
without a church, without tho
tho divinely-appointed ministry
tho euoharist and the priest
without an Aaron aMolchisodok
an altarya holy of holies
into thorn all, wo say, onters world
ly pride, conceit, solf-lovo, de

Wo sco all about us evon in the
church wo love those who in
their zeal, mistaken laud now wo
would speak with all rovoronce),
really think, if we can judgo from
actions and sometimes words,
that thov know, two to ono. moro
about managing tho affairs of tho
"church militant hero on earth"
than did tho blessed Saviour, its
Founder. And whilo wo may
smilo at thoir uuduo folly and
presumption, lot mo tell you that
it is too often that one, of compa
ratively weak intellect, can do
much harm by his over-earnestness
in u wrong and nncounsoled
direction. AVo havo seen this
unripo, unsound fruit moro than
Tho Ballington Booths today

of San Francisco culled "Barbary

of tho Salvation Army
who had beon reclaimed by it
and who for fouryears had beon ono
of its active and efliciont workers
was found drunk on tho sidewalk.
Sho had gouo thoro on hor work,
had in a tempted moment fallen
in with old time companions, and
fallen down, striking tho stones a
heavy blow with hor poor head.
A captain camo along just then,
but ho did not pass by on tho
other sido. "Ilore, Boss, pick up
your man; sho belongs to you,
you know;" said tho seller of poi
son. "Ay," said tho bravo lady,
"wo will pick hor up, and if you
throw her down ninety and nine
times we'll como around; for you
represent tho devil only, whilo wo
roprosont God and we'll try to
show you which is stronger." Tho
man had listened, unwittingly, to
deep theology and a sound Sun
day sormon and ho slunk into his
