About twenty years ago, Captain
Knowles camo to this Coast as tho
agent of several Boston ships, and
hnd long been prominent in mnr
ino circles, lie wns nt ono time n
cnptnin on tho sens, the last crnft
which ho commnnded hnving boon
. tho Glory of tho Sens. The ship
was built by tho famous shipbuild
er, Donald McKay of Boston, nnd
was distinguished by being the ono

construction of n boat, in which
tho whole party sailed for Samoa.

voyed to San Francisco, whoro
Cnptnin Knowles learned that ho
had boon given up as dead, a
portion of his estate having boon
distributed to his hoirs.

is survived by a widow and seven
