Aavo boen onrolled during the
year, ,750 boing quite regnlar at
tondants. G girls snd8 boys
leave 'the school to go into tho
next .grade. While 10 is tho
largest daily attendance, tho
largest icvorugo daily attendance
for ono .month has been 35, tho
smallest 18. This. docreaBO is
duo to 'tho opidemio of measles
during ilay, and reduces tho
averago .daily attendance for tho
year to -.20.
As a rule tho children are obe
dient. Industry and plodding
work nro a direct gift from
their fathers, but th-.v slniio
in the restlessness of all
babyhood. Thoro is a popular
notion that tho Chineoo lack
affection, but Miss Snow cannot
complain of any such lack, for tho
children who woro so shy nt first
havo responded to her kindness
in a rrrnlifvinp innnnor. Thoso
who at the -first of tho year are j
dull and lifeless unfold in tho t
gonial atmosphoro of tho Kiudor

sunshine. In many of tho Ohin-

adults heard anywhere in China
town, a meandering, uumolodie
minor accompanied by scraping
splintors of bamboo ono is sur
prised to, hear tho children sing
ing of sunshine and flowers as
sweetly as nature's own birds.
Someone who has heard all the
children of tho Kindergartens
sing thinks tho singing of the
Chinoso tho sweotest. Sorco
might not judgo theirs best.
Adaptability is as sure a charac
teristic of tho Chinoso in Honolu
lu as their oft quoted unprogros
sivoness. This is shown in tho
dress of tho Kindergarten
children. "With few exceptions
tho boys are minus quoues, and
the looso garments of thoir foro
fathers are replaced by tho closer
fitting European costumes. As
would bo oxpected, the dress of
tho girls is moro conservative
Since January Bomo 100 porsouB
havo visited tho Kindergarten.
Thoso who havo como repeatedly
have noticed many improvements,
bettor order, moro prompt
obedionco and greater intelligence
in gift work. The elfect of visitors
on tho children is interesting, the
presence of outsiders lending zeal
to tho work done at the seats,
drawing, weaving, etc., but
dampening all ardor for conversa
tion. The reason is not far to
seek. Language is the rare para
mount difficulty as well as tho
basis of all progress, and just as
rapidly as language is grasped
aro interost and intelligence in
creased. This is proved in tho
second and third years. Object
lessons, then, aro a necessity, and
in them simplo talks aro given.
One of tho best of Kindergarten
methods, story-telling, is almost
usolcss for tho children as yet.
Tho teacher never uses pigeon
English, and the patience ro-
auired to speak grammatically to
leso children is worth while
when they correct "mo nocan" to
"I cannot: I will try." If this
last noto bo tho clarion call of the
Kindergarten, continued progross
win oo inovnaoio.
Under tho excellent instruction
of Miss Ozawa, a cultivated Jap
anese lady, tho Japaneso Kinder
garten has made good progross
during the year. Tho attendance
for the first part of the year was
irrogulur because bo many of the
children's paronts migrated to
Japan or tho other islands; 29, tho
averago attendance of tho first
term, lias risen to 35 tho last part
of tho yoar. Thoro has been little
sickness, tho few light cases of
measles and whooping cough not
being serious onough to interrupt
tho routine of tho work Tho
children were undor a certain dis
advantage in not understanding
English when thoy entered tho
Kindergarten. Thoy aro apt learn
ers, however, and quickly acquir
ed enough English to understand
their toaehcr and to play their
games and sing thoir songs in
