Moving Mountain In Jnpnn.
An oxobnngo enyB: "Among
tho many objects of intorost that
havo boon brought to light by tho
Anglo'Yonozuolan diaiiuto thoro
18, perhaps, nonothat claims quito
so much attention from tho scien
tific world ns tho so called moun
tain of Boraima. Situated in tho
southwestern comorof Sir llobort
Schomburgk's alleged boundary
botwoon British Guiana and Ven
ezuela, this wonderful geographi
cal phenomenon, although long
known, has elicited but little in
terest. In point of fnetj howoyor,
it is a veritablo scientihe sphinx,
tho message of whose riddlo has
como clown intact and unread from
far geological opoi'hs to tho pre
sent time. This stupi'udous
mountain, or isolated luhlclnuil,
which tho nativo Indians
called 'Eoraima,'or, tho myste
rious, rises high in solitary gran
deur abovo the- surrounding
mountain Bystom, its perpendicu
lar rocky sidos reudoring it abso
lutely inaccessible to tho foot of
man or beast. Crowing this im
pregnable fortress of nntnro is a
tract of torritory estimated to con
tain upward of 110 squaro milos.
Unlike othor innccoaBiblo moun
tain summits of tho world, this
elevated region is no mero wilder
ness of snow-capped ridges. On
tho contrary, all tho indications,
including tho positive evidence- of
tho tolescopo, points to its being
covered with forests, intersected
with river, fed from lakes, and to
pobscss a climate that must, in
tho nature of things, bo temperate
that is, neither wintry desnito
its altitude, nor tropical, despito
its equatorial position."
An English paper in Japan has
"According to tho Yomiuri, a
remarkoblo discovery was recent

in tho rango extending fiom Noto
to Etchiu Province, situated in
tho north-eastern corner of tho
formor province, at Aza Hara,
Ilisayo-Maru, Knjiuia district,
about 12 miles from tho town of
Nanao, has been found to move
in ono direction oneo in every
four or live years, 20 to 30 feet at
a time. On every occasion of
such movement tho plantation at
its base was forced out and largo
cracks woro caused. About April
13th tho hill again moved somo
20 feet. A hamlet is situat d on
tho hill side, which consists of 15
housos. Nothing special has hap
pened to thoio houses, beyond a
Blight leaning out of the perpen
dicular. It is said that the houses
havo had to bo rebuilt within tho
last 30 or -10 years, because they
inclined bo badly that it was
dangorous to live in them. Tho
forward movement of tho hill is
not noticeable. Tho Yomiuri
adds that similar phenomena havo
been known in Europe for a long

Honolulu's warm climate is
conducive of thirst to a greater
dogreo than that of a colder zone.
Tho average- business man loses
also, to a degree, the amount of
energy and nervous force common
enough in tho Imu-ing air of
Ameiican cities. ThebO two phases
of our climate make it more
necessary than ohowhero to stim
