ponded, a volley being fired at
about fifty yards. Probably a
scoro of Chinese soldiers under

ed him on their knees to retire, as
they would all bo killed. The
shooting was caused by tho jeal
i ousy of the Chinese soldiery to
v ward foreign interference.
Immediately on word being re
ceived tho Gorman cruiser Prin
cess Wilholm left Woosung for
tho scone of tho shooting. The
war ship wont ashoro on Tier way
and much delay was caused in
getting hor off. The German
Minister will demand a searching
investigation. A statement to tho
effect that tho affair was a delib
erately planned attempt at murder
was published, but tho above
