HOW DYNAMITE IS MADE.
The Deadly Explosive Composed of Nitro
glycerin arid ,Karth.
. Tho boat quality of dynamifo. is a
mixtnro of 75 per cent of nitroglycerin
and 26 por.pcnt of. kIeBalguhri. sili
ceous earth with a highly absorptivo
power, capablo of taking up two or
' thrco times its own weight of nitroglyc
erin without becoming pasty. Tho ob
ject of tho mixtnro is to diminish tho
(usccptibility of nitroglycerin to slight
shocks, mid to facilitate tho carrying of
it without destroying ita oxplosivo
force. Dynamite is in nppcaranco not
unliko brown sugar. "Whilo moist it is
squeezed into cartridges, which nro
prepared, of parchment paper, nnd tho
firing is dono by fulmiuato of silver in
copper capsules, provided with patent
exploders. Its diRruptivo forco is esti
mated at about eight times that of gun
powder, and it has tho peculiarity of
taking effect in a downward direction.
Nitroglycerin, which is n light yellow,
oily liquid, is nitrio ucid 1 part and
sulphuric acid 2 parts, to which is add
ed ordinary glycerin and tho misturo
well washed with puro water. It lias n
sweet, aromatic, pungent tasto nnd tho
peculiar property of causing u headacho
when placed in a small quantity on tho
tonguo or wrist. It was first used in
bombs dropped from balloons in tho
Franco-German war (1870-1).
How "Doc Darn" Derived Tlielr Name.
Tho dog days last, properly speaking,
from tho 8d of July to tho 11th of Au
gust. Tho popular theory is that they
nro so called becauso dogs then go mad ;
but tho notion is ctmyologically false,
besides being uutruo in fact. Dogs,
strango to say, nro rather less liablo to
rabies then than at other times. "Dog
days" is really n translation of tho Latin
dies canicnlarcs tho 20daysbcforo and
tho 20 days after tho heliacal rising (i.
c., nppcnruuco in tho morning just bo
foro tlio sun) of tho star Sirius, whom
tho Romans called ' 'Canicula, " or littlo
dog. Tho ancients attributed n most
malevolent inllucnco to this star our
"dog star," and sacrificed n brown dog
to it to appcaso its rage.
How Mountains Were Formed.
Mountains may lmvo arisen from
thrco causes: 1. From tho corrugation
of tho earth's crust, duo to tho effects of
secular contraction. 2. From tho accu
mulation of matorialr poured out of
volcanic orifices. 3. From tho insula
tion of olovated musses of ground, ow
ing to tho removal by denudation of tho
materials connecting them, mid to tho
consequent formation of valleys. Moun
tains formed in tho volcanic way tiro
almost always conical, and nro cither
solitary, as Etna, or occur in linear
groups, liko tho volcanoes of Java.
Thoso formed by denudation nro of
minor dimensions, and rather descrvo
tho uamo of hills. Mountain chains, on
tho other hand, which nro tho dominant
features of tho earth's surface, though
they may bnvo lines of volcanic vents
along their crests, nro not formed essen
tially of volcanic material, but of tho
sedimentary and crystallino crust which
has been ridged up into vnst folds.
Mountain chains must, therefore, bo re
garded as ovidenco of tho shrinkago of
tho earth's niasa They may bo tho re
sult of ouo movement of a long succes
sion of movements.
How to Make Uat Flower.
Flowers mado of tnffctn silk aro ono
of tho season's most popular gnrnituro
for nil kinds of headgear. They aro
very offectivo, and may bo mado at
homo at comparatively small cost, and
equal in overy respect to thoso bought
at a high priced milliner's. A doublo
rufilo of tho silk is joined mid gathered
in tho center, something nf tcr tho fash
ion of n rosette. Tho centers must bo
purchased and should bo of tliu ssuno
sliado as thoso of tho natural flower.
Poppies, roos nnd larger flowors dovolop
most satisfactorily, tho smaller blossoms
requiring professional construction.
IIow to Hold Up the Skirt.
Tho left hand is invariably used for
lifting tho skirt. Tho first priuciplo is
that tho arm should not bo crooked nt
tho elbow, but should hnug straight
from tho fiido as tho hand is brought
right to tho center of tho buck, gather
ing tho folds and bringing them to tho
side with tho arm still straight. In this
way tho fullness of tho skirt is brought
to tho left side, slightly raised, and thus
tho cntiro bottom of tho skirt escapes
Over n very muddy crossing nso both
hands. Tho nrnis again drop straight
from tho side, each hand gathers tho
fullness, tho skirt is very slightly raised
so ns not to allow it to dip in tho center
of tho back. But this hiodo of lifting
tho skirts is permissible only over very
muddy crossings. Tho singlo hand man.
ner of protecting tho dress aguinst un
clean streets nnd sidewalks is sufilciout
for ull other purposes.
