HOW DYNAMITE IS MADE.
The Deadly Explosive Composed of Nitro
glycerin arid ,Karth.
. Tho boat quality of dynamifo. is a
mixtnro of 75 per cent of nitroglycerin
and 26 por.pcnt of. kIeBalguhri. sili
ceous earth with a highly absorptivo
power, capablo of taking up two or
' thrco times its own weight of nitroglyc
erin without becoming pasty. Tho ob
ject of tho mixtnro is to diminish tho
(usccptibility of nitroglycerin to slight
shocks, mid to facilitate tho carrying of
it without destroying ita oxplosivo
force. Dynamite is in nppcaranco not
unliko brown sugar. "Whilo moist it is
squeezed into cartridges, which nro
prepared, of parchment paper, nnd tho
firing is dono by fulmiuato of silver in
copper capsules, provided with patent
exploders. Its diRruptivo forco is esti
mated at about eight times that of gun
powder, and it has tho peculiarity of
taking effect in a downward direction.
Nitroglycerin, which is n light yellow,
oily liquid, is nitrio ucid 1 part and
sulphuric acid 2 parts, to which is add
ed ordinary glycerin and tho misturo
well washed with puro water. It lias n
sweet, aromatic, pungent tasto nnd tho
peculiar property of causing u headacho
when placed in a small quantity on tho
tonguo or wrist. It was first used in
bombs dropped from balloons in tho
Franco-German war (1870-1).

How Mountains Were Formed.
Mountains may lmvo arisen from
thrco causes: 1. From tho corrugation

tion of olovated musses of ground, ow

sion of movements.
