The mombors of tbo firm of John
Ivnncovich it Co., comiuissiou
morclinnts, doing business on
Washington street, between Unvis
and Front, nro interested in the
movements of Eugouo Doy'e, who
bns for tbo pnst soven yeurs been
tbo collector for the concorn.
Doyle went out Inst Saturday
morning, having in his possession
a chock tor S14."o.l7, pnynblo at
tbo ljnnk of California, with which
bo wits to purchnso oxchaugo. Ho
also had $11(5 in coin, with which
to pay certain bills, and ho also
had a largo number of statements
of accounts which wore to bo de
livered at business bouses around
"Whon Saturdny afternoon carao
around and Doyle did not roturn
tbo meinbors of tbo firm began to
grow anxious. There was aolmnco
that Doyle might Lave S2C00 in
cash in bis keeping and that soma
one had caused foul play. Tbo
partners, who are P. L. Vucauo
vich and G. Boleney, began to
make inquiries, but tbo Bank of
California was closed, and thoro
was no way to ascertain whether
'Doylehad been thoro with the chock
for $1-153.17. Stores were gener
ally closed with whom the firm
The incpiiries wore pushed,
however, and before night it wos
ascertained that Dojln went
aboard the steamer Australia,
which Bailed Saturday, and that bo
had departed on that vessel for
Doylo cotuoit from a pood fami
ly. His farther uirmcily lived at
Virginia City and Mr. Yucanovich
know him well at that place This
in fact led to the young man
entering tbo employment of
Ivnncovich iV Co. The pnitners
found out that Doylo had not
boon lhing lately with his pa
rents, ami other facts wero as
certained which indicated that
ho had been spending considera
ble money in various ways.
Monday morning tbo check
. which Doylo took out Saturday
was found at tho postoilico ad
dressed to tho firm. This did not
reassure his employers. A com
parison of books nnd nccounta led
to the discovery that Doj lo, who
was implicitly trusted, during
soven years of continuous service,
had since last May been
holding back a part of tbo
collections made by him
from customers. lie made some
collections on Saturday last, but
just how much had not been as
certained last night. Mr. Yucan
covicli says that probably tlto
short igo in Doyle's accounts will
exceed $1000 and that it may
amount to $2000, but thoro is still
much uncertainty concerning tho
Tho probability is that Doylo
will continue on "from Honolulu
to Yokohama or Hongkong on tho
next China steamer. Ho speaks
Chinese iluently and would have
no dilliculty in making his way
among tho Chinese.
The film has not derided whoth-
or to have Doylo stopped if ho
should continue on. Thoro would
bo no dilliculty in identifying
' him. Ho is about '25 years old,
prepossessing in appearanco and
manners and well educated. He
' has otteu had as much as $2000 in
- gold taken in collections in ono
' day but up to Saturday not tho
least suspicion wns entertained
concerning his honesty. Ho has
uo property, so that the firm will
, probably have to boar tho loss.
Following closely upon this dis
appearance of tbo collector tho
now was received yesterday of
the Ihi-h df tl i- stunner Colombia
by which the firm loses about
$1000. S. V Call.
