Liout. Edward II. F. Woltors of
company II, Hnwniinn imlioiml
guard, nnd daughter have boon
Bponding two or thrco dnyB in the
city, with tho Occidental hotol as
their kondqitnrtars,snys tho Seattle,
Wash., Times o July 22. The
lioutonant leaves this ovoning for
homo by way of Oakland ami San
Francisco. Liout. Wolters knows
any number of old timo Seattle
neoplo who now make tho island
capital their homo, and many aro
doing well. A few had met bad
luck and aro not prospering very
well. The commercial world of
Honolulu looks at Seattle as next
in importance) to San Francisco,
and they are eager to push trade
rolationB with tho Sound raotro
polia in every way they can. Lieut.
WoltorB is away on sick leave.
Back of this, however, is a moro
important object, which ho is fost
ering and which will become of
much importauco to tho trade of
.Seattle Ho docs not tell just tho
nature of tho business outerpriso
ho aud thrco other associates on
tiio island aro going to launch,
but ho says it will bo one in which
Seattlo will bo much interested.
Tho lieutenant, whilo a pro
minent member of the isl
and army, is also en
gaged in business and is making
monoy. Ho runs a hotel in the
capital and handles tho boor im
ported Dy tho Seattle browing and
limiting company of this city, and
he says it is a fact that this com
pany supplips two thirds of the
beer sold on tho islands. There
is gront prosperity on tho islands
this year. Tho sugar business is
paying great dividends, probably
on account of the Cuban rebellion,
and it is proving a gold mine to
tho California sugar ;nen. Hono
lulu is growing, now streots aro
boiug made and tho city is extend
ing and new buildings going up
everywhere. Labor is woll paid
and carpenters, plumbers, tin
smiths, blacksmiths and artisans
generally do well. He would not
advise any one going thoro ex
pecting in a vory short time to
make a lot of monoy and crawl
out again. Mechanics, howovor,
can make monoy vory quickly if
they try. Ho cited tho caso of
one Seattlo man, Buttortield by
name, who went thero but a short
timo ago without any monoy, and
has siuco made enough money to
pay for a $2000 home, all his, all
Liout. "Woltors said he had been
in Honolulu nine years, and whon
urged to state what ho is worth at
tin present timo put his wealth at
about 30,000, a good showing,
which ho appeared to think any
man with thrift might equal. Tho
lieutenant says his company iills
a post of honor to tho president
aud it is composed of some of tho
best man over thero. They stand
rottdy to bo called out at auy timo
occasion demands. Tho govern
ment likes to have tho most pro
minent men at tho head ot the
guard. Such men aro double as
surance of Bafety, for having pro
perty of thoir own at stako they
may bo counted on at all times to
do -thoir full duty. Honolulu
maintains daily newspapers in
several languages, English, Ila
waiian, Chinese nnd Japanese,
besides several weeklies, circula
ting in all parts of tho republic.
Education and general intelli
gence is progressing among all
clasbcs, and, in fact, there is but
one thing Hawaiiaus seem to de
sire, and that is, as Lieut. Woltors
oxprossod it, "tho Hag Grovor
