HOW TO CLEAN STEEL.
Alio to Remove llust and Get a Good
If tho steel is only tarnished, almost
tbo best thing to apply is irottcnstono
nndeonp; it should bo laid' on with a
soft flaunol quickly and firmly, and im-medlntely-bo
.polished with n leather;
but if thcro aro any signs of rust on tho
articles, try tho following: DIbsoIvo
ono-fourth of an ounco of camphor in
nearly half a pound of lard; when tho
latter is quito molted carefully rcmovo
nil tho scum, and when nearly cold and
tot, mix with tho lard as much black
lead as will givo it n rich iron color.
Hub tho ornaments with tills mixture
nud leavo them for 24 hours. Polish
them with an old linen rag and a soft
brush that will go into tho crovicos. If
all tho fenders, etc. , wcro rubbed every
other day witli a leather, and onco a
fortnight with a paste, thcro would
nover bo any reason for spending mucli
timo over them. This applies to bras?,
which looks so remarkably woll when
it is cared for, and so objcctionablo it
allowed to remain tarnished. Lomon
juice, putz pomado, eta, aro good occa
sional remedies, but tho leather fre
quently used is tho best in tho long run.
How to Remove Statoi Froin Marble.
Every housekeeper knows tho stains
which will como on morblo washbasins
nud tho troublo to which sho has gono
in vain efforts to rcmovo them. Somo
times lemon jnico will toko them off.
Again ommouiu may bo applied with
If this will not movo them, a littlo
spongo may bo firmly attached to a
small stick and then dipped in hydro
chloric acid, with which tho stain
should bo rubbed. As soon as it shows
signs of yiolding tho marblo should bo
covered with, water and all tho wet,
both acid and water, rubbed oil with
another and largor spongo.
This may bo repeated, if necessary,
but tho ncid should not bo allowed to
remain long on tho marblo. To rcstoro
tho lost polish afterward, mako a paste
with water of oxido of tin and apply
witli a. soft cloth.
How to Manicure Tonr Own Nolls.
A woman is judged by her nails, as n
man's standing and profession aro known
by his hat. Of courso a young woman
from any of tho mauicuro establishments
will do your nails for tho consideration
of $ 1, but if you consider this too ex
pensive, or find it inconvenient to fccud
for her always, you run attend to your
own nails just as woll, and with an
outlay of sf 2. CO havo enough powder
ongaliue, emery boards, pasto and or
ango sticks to last for a long time.
Tho fingers should bo held for ten
minutes in hot water in which n small
mixturo of rosowntcr and giated hoap
has been poured, then dried carefully,
and tho cutiolo pushed back, never cut,
until tho half moon at tho bottom of tho
nail, which is considered quito a work
of beauty, is exposed.
Tho nails aro then shaped, points be
ing considered by tho ultra critical very
bnd taste. Tho oval shtipo roigns su
preme. A bit of powder is applied, then tho
pink paste, moro powder, and tho first
polisher is used. A veiy exaggerated
polish is not desirable After tho hands
aro woll washed tho second polisher,
which must not bo touohed with tho
powder, is used. If thcro aro any stains
under tho nails, thoy may bo rcino'v ed
by tying a bit of cotton on tho orango
stick and moistening it with ongalinc.
