Auothor euro for consumption
is tuinouncod. M. G. Scarpa, of
Turin, claims to huvo succeeded
in tho treatment of cavitios in
consumptivo patients by injecting
into thoir interior eolutiouB of
pure ichtliyol in Bterilised water,
from one to 15 per cent. Tho in
strument used is a syringe, con
taining 10 or 12 cubic centimetres,
fitted with several fiuo noodles,
which ho pabses between tho ribs
at tho spot vhoro tho cavity lies.
These injections aro r;"n.ul
twico a week, first with m ik -lutions,
of which only a gramme
is used, and then with stronger
solutions, of -which tho doso ib
gradually raised to 12, 15, 20, and
oven 25 cubic centimetres. When
this is done, tho patient should
remain quietly in a recumbent
position for a wbilo, and check so
far as possible all desiro to cough.
Tho injection is gonorully follow
ed by a modorato rise of toinpora
turo that does not last, and gives
riso to abundant expectoration.
The result of tho treatment shows
itself after ten or twenty injections
by progressive decrease in tho ex
pectoration, the number of bacilli
iB less, tho night sweats and fovor
diminish, appetite and strength
return, and tho physical signs im
prove. ltKl'OltTXl) CUBE Toil INSAXITV.
A New York tolenram Bays that
a wonderful discovery is reported
to have been mado by Dr. War
ren iiabcook, the head of the St.
Lawrouco State Hospital, viz., tho
euro under certain conditions of
acute dolhioua mania. The pa
tient suffering from this form of
insanity is submitted to an opera
tion in the lumbar region, a punc
ture being mado aud a certain
quantity of cerebrospinal fluid
withdiawn. 'J ho puncture is mado
betweon tho iirst and second lum
bar vortobno, and the fluid thus
obtained is stained by aniline
dyos to bIiow the presence of bac
teria, which are easily discovered.
Those have beou found to bo the
common germ of croupous pneu
monia, showing tho delirium to
be duo to tho action on tho uervo
centres of the brain. 'Iho germs
occur singly as a lule, and nsuo
other gorms rosomblo those, it has,
therefore, been considoied uuhko
ly that a mistake has bom made.
By way of lest, a rabbit was in
fected with these germs, and
developed tho expected symptoms,
nnd aho tho watery fluid which
was drained fiom the spinal
column, this being done in twenty
two cases. This latter opoiatiou,
it was also found, resulted iu tho
cine of both paralysis and paiosis.
Tlieso had an ounce and it half of
tho fluid drained from tho spine,
but tour ounces woio drawn fiom
tho insane patients, still leaving
the normal quantity aud giving
relief. Hithorto any intorferrenco
with the epiual matter nionut
death. Tho pressure of this fluid
on the brain caused insanity, and
its character of acuta mania,' be
ing thus changed to apparent
mental disorder, depends on tho
action of tho germ being simply a
physical diBoaso with mental com
plement. TRANSPLANTATION OP TEETH.
Mr. Scott Thomson, in a com
munication to the Journal of tho
Biitish Dental Association, says:
"In December 1874 I extracted
two upppr lateral incisors from
the mouth of a boy in order to re
liovo an overcrowded stato of tho
teeth. These wore inserted in
about half an hour into sockets of
similar tooth removed from tho
mothor for caries. Tho import
ance of removing tho pulps of
transplanted toeth was not at that
time recognized and was not car
ried out in this cube. Twelve
moutliB subsequently an alveolar
abscess occurred in connection
with tho left lateral incisor, which
rapidly subsided under treatment
by drilling a 'vent' and bread
poultices. 1 saw this patient quito
recontly, that is more than hvouty
ono yenrs after tho opoiatiou, and
these teeth aro still in situ, and
although Bomowhat looso aro in
as good a condition as tho rest of
her tooth. Tho right lateral is
distinctly sensitive to thermal
changes. Can tho pulp bo still
