undor tho chargo of tho Hawaiian
Board of Health, is practically tho
world's experimental station for
tho troatment of loprosy, and
hundreds of methods of treating
tho disease among tho Kanakas
there havo boon ineffectually triod.
This fact does not dipcourago me,
howovor, nor am I roudercd any
tho less eager to iulroduco this
now troatment at Molokai by tho
well-known fact that tho form of
loprosy which alllicts the Kanakas
has always boon regarded as tho
most hopeless in tho world. Tho
loprosy which has scourged tho
islands of Hawaii, and which now
bids fair to result in tho uttor ex
termination of tho natives, was
brought to tho South Pacific from
Europe Two leprous riddon
Portuguese sailors, who woro
beach-combors in Honolulu oarly
in this century, are responsible
for tho plaguo of loprosy among
tho beautiful Hawaiian Islands,
whoro litorally hundreds of
thousands of tho Kana
kas a notably strong and
handsome peoplo before tho in
troduction of tho scourgo havo
become its victims. The form of
leprosy which prevails there id
quicker in action aud more reptil
bivo as to its outward timiiiftistu
tions than any other known form
ofdiseaso; but, notwithstanding
this fact, I vonturo to Buy that,
with tho co operation of the Ha
waiian Board of Health, which
will unquestionably bo given me,
1 shall bo ablo to utterly eradicate
leprosy in tho Hawaiian Islands
within two years, and probably in
a much shorlor p riod."
The comfortablo school of
scientists say that leproay does
not easily find a foothold among a
clean, strong, naturally healthy
raco of peoplo, but that it is a
disease which chiefly character
izes nations of physical degener
ates. Dr. Bouffe, tho Fronch
loprosy export, who was tho first
to discovor tho loprosy microbe,
belongs to this school, .but his
statement is being strongly at
tacked by other scioutists.
