The writer who reviews books
for the San FrnnciBco Curouiclo
lms tbWfollowing to sny concern
ing n now book which is for bhIo
at the local bookstores:
"Wo lmvo a now Ilawniian
volume of lovo nntl adventure,
with tho odd titlo of 'Throe Old
Maids in Hawaii,' by Ellon Black
mar Maxwell. It is tho story of
three uumarried American women
who visit the islands together
shortly after tho establishment of
tho republic. Thoy seo the vol
cano of Kilauea and a fow other
localities of inteiest, minglo spar
ingly with tho natives, hobnob
with the Honolulu four hundred,
cat poi with their lingers, sigh in
the soft moonlight, fall in lovo
with tho same man, quarrel in
private, discover a conspiracy
against the government, assist in
tho recovery of stolon crown
jewels, and do much besides that
is strictly fomiuiuo and mildly
diamatic. Ono of thorn finally
captures tho geutlomnn in ques
tion and the ollior two loturn to
tho United States without waiting
for the wedding. They are a
cynical and unattractive trio, and
the reader eau feel no espocial in
teiest iu any of them.
"Tho wi iter is not always eithor
correct or just in roforring to tho
natives. Instead of thoro having
been a ' little streak of chief
blood' in tho voins of Kalakaua,
it is declared by Judge Fornan
der, tho hibtorian of tho Polyne
sian race, that the strain of Kala
kaua tas quite as noble as that
of tho lirst Kamolmmeha. The
author also ens iu stuliug that it
was a common habit a few years
back for Hawaiian mothers to
leave their infant childion to star
vation under coverings of leaves
and loose eaith; alBO, in remark
ing that tho labors of tho mission
aries were finally rewarded by the
abandonment of idolatry by the
natives, Biuco that eveut occurred
before tne nrrival of tho mission
aries. And it may further be re
marked that the god Lono, quo of
tho ancient Hawaiian trinity,
should not be confounded with
Lonoikamakahiki, a noted King
of Hawaii in the sixteenth coutury,
who, accordiug to tradition, was
jealous of Iub queen. It may also
be mentioned that people do not
danco ' in tho shade of the wide
Bproading branchos of the hau
tree,' the growth of which is hori
zontal, and that tho nativo raothod
of killing sharks in their element
is not to leap on their backs and
ride them to death.
"But enough of theso mistakes.
And now lotit bo said in fairness
that tho book contains so much
that is bright in character touches,
bo much that is historically and
descriptively truo that tho reader
will pardon tho shortcomings of
tho fantastic stories of lovo and
Jealousy through which thoy are
woven. Tho volume is iu clear
print and substantial binding, and
contains ton full-pago illustra

jiroiJTANT: There aro very fow
things moro hurtful thau common
tea. An eminent English doctor
once said: "If the public gave up
drinking common tea, tho occupa
tion of 0110 half of our piofession
would bo gouo." Good tea, how
ever, is 1 of reshing and stimulat
ing", and iu introducing this arti
cle to tho public, the oilicers of tho
Salvation Army have takon great
pains to secure a tea, which can
with the greatest corifidonce bo ro
coiriinonded as being of the very
highest siandard of ox'cellenco,
and hnvo decided to sell it at a
iirico within the reach of overy
iody, and although it will leave
hib a very small mat gin of profit
indeed, we aio satisfied, kuowing
that what wo sell is sure to give
satisfaction. Sold in Jib" paokets.
