fcAMIE AGAIN.
Sik or oight weeks ago tho Bul
letin gave the intelligence that
a. satisfactory method of preparing
ramie fibre for spinning and weav
ing had boon discovered, and that
largo capital was 'about to bo in
vested In faotorioBfor working tho
process both in Europe and Atn
orion. A local contemporary has
just given auothor account of the
Bamo discovery. Much interest
was token in ramie here a few years
ago whou different' decorticating
prooesaoa gavosomepromis eof suc
cess. Thoro should bo a revival
of intercut in tho cultivation of
tho plant, if theso reports of tho
discovery of an eil'eotivo process
provo to be correct. Tho ramio
pluut thrives with littlo cultiva
tion in theso islands. With fac
tories in tlto United States to tnko
the raw fibre, a valuablo new nrti
c'o of export should appoar in
Ilavraiiati commerce.
AMERICA AND ARMENIA.
A report comes by tho Vancouv
er mail that Turkey has refused to
admit a United States warship
through the Dardanelles, on tho
ground that the Borliu agreement
excludes from naval representa
tion in tho BoBphoruB any Power
hot it party to that agreement. It
Ih stated as being known iu official
cirolot that Russia objected to tho
prosouco iu tho Bosphorus of tho
United States, Greciau or Dutch
guardsjiipH. Commenting on this
pews, tho Honolulu Advertiser
Bays that tho United States has
warships out there only for the
protection of Americau citizens,
jnstoail of with the object of seiz
ing territory, and makos this curi
ous observation: "If the Porte
onn be forced to pick a row with
Uncle Sam's men it will afford an
opportunity for tho European
upwards to dally over and put on"
tho inevitable division of tho
Turkish Empire." It is n
email matter to our journal of
blood and iron for tho European
nations to rush, blindfolded as it
worn, into the liability of a gener
al war in which tho carnage would
baggar tho annals of tho world's
history in vain for a parallel. Tho
otusoof the suffering Armenians
should not be moro Europo's con
cern tliou that of America and
Australia. Even within her own
peculiar sphi-ro of iniluence, com
prising the western hemisphere,
tho lnited State has never adopted
tho policy ut righting tho great
wrongs iu siht. Othorwiso sho
should long ago have put
au end to auaruhy and
outrage in Cuba. Asa matter of
factthe United States has no small
interest in tho East. Her manu
factures have a largo markot right
in tho dominions of tho Sultan,
and American missionaries havo
eh a rod more than slightly in the
persecution of tho Armenians.
If, then, the United States deems
it nqcossary to send worships into
the Bosphorus for tho protection
other own interests, and Turkey
with or without the instigation of
Russia lofut-oi to grant permis
sion for t.io passage of tho yobsoIs,
a (junrrol would seem to bo tho
natural cojsequonco and no
forcing process emanating from
tho "cowards" of Europo have any
thing to do with it. Thoro is a
divinity that shapes the ends of
nations, ns well as of individuals,
rough how them as they will, and
if if, should become tho destiny of
tho' Unitod Siulo-i, us a powerful
raoinbor of tho family of civilized
nations, to bo tho leading instru
ment iu wiping Turkish iufnmy
forovor off tho faco of tho earth,
tho immutablo docreo cannot bo
u u iwf,fntl
thwarted ovou by tho opposition
of tho Pncifio Commercial Advcr
tiaor. Oriental labor odaptablo as it is
to climates that nono other can
enduro Booms to have been des
tiuod for subduing tho wilderness
1 places of tho earth in those times
I to productiveness for supplying
all tho wants of mankind. Sir
William Maxwell, Govornor of tho
1 Gold Coast Colony, makos a strong
plea for tho introduction of
Ohineso labor in that colony.
With so many countries drawing
" from tho surplus labor resources
of China, and tho prospoot of an
early inauguration of internal do-
volopmont in China on modorn
lines, it is safo to anticipate a per
iod, in tho not distant future,
1 when Chinoso labor will bo moro
in demand than supply through-
out tho world.
Quoth the Advertiser: "Our
evening contemporary apparently
forgot that Princo Edwards Isl
and jokes, liko somo English
jokos, need a key to go with
thorn." The morning paper is
great on tho retort geographical,
but in this caso, as nono of tho
Bulletin staff has over boen in
Princo Edward Island, n Maine
canting dog is needed to got tho
bark from tho under sido of tho
log.
To prevent anything but tho
genuine nrticlo from boing placed
on tho foreign matkots as Hawaii
an colliee, the Hawaii Horald ad
vocates tho appointment of au in
spector by the Government to seal
and stamp every bag of coffee ex
ported. This a proper suggestion
that should be considered by tho
Government.
LaBt time tho Advertiser at
tempted an Araorican joko it had
to apologizo for tho experiment
next morning. No key was re
quired to got at tho truo nature of
its author's referenco to the head
of his own nation, saying he could
only "lick" an ex official of Ha
waii in efligy on a postage 6timp.

BICYCLE TRADE IN
HAWAII.
It is a mistake to suppose
for a moment that the Hawaii-
an Hardware Company is go
ing out of the business of
t selling- bicycles. Not much.
1 We know a good thing when
we have it and our bicycle
trade has been and is now a
good thing. We have no doubt
I some of our competitors would
like to see us let go of Th e
Tribune agency, for instance,
but we don't intend to do it.
The Tribune is the best all
round wheel in the market and
j we are selling them right along.
: They are good serviceable
'wheels and don't cost their
I owners $10 a month forre
! pairs, like some wheels we
know.
Now that Alarshal Brown
and his myrmidons are on the
warpath against wheelmen and
have declared in no uncertain
tone of voice that they must
carry a light at night, it be
hooves all of them to get the
best light they can for the
least money. We have a large
stock on hand at prices to suit
the times say from 1.!0 to
4.J0. It is cheaper to buy
one of the highest priced lamps
than to be hauled up in the
Police Court and fined, besides
the loss of time incurred and
the wear and tear of your
temper.
While we are not going out
of the bicycle business by any
means, we have a small con
signment of bicycle shoes
which were sent us with a lot
of other bicycle material. We
want to close these out and
do it quick, as we are not in
the shoe business. Come and
take a look at them, and if
there is a pair in the house
you want you can take them
along with you for a very
small consideration.
We have a few of the well
known "Zimmy" Wheels left.
We want to close these out too,
so as to devote our whole
attention to the Tribune agency.
If you want a wheel cheap for
cash now is your chance.
Money talks on these wheels.
Show us the cash and it will
be our fault if we don't make
you happy with one of them.
We still carry the usual line
of extras for the Tribune and
other wheels we handle, and
shall continue to do so.
