EFFECTIVE FANCY WORK.
A Ult of Ticking Trnutfonnril With Tinsel,
Gar Sllka and llabj ltlbbons.
Marvolonsly rich and lmndsomo is a
handkerchief ctuo worked in imitation
of oriental embroidery, but tho founda
tion ia nothing moro claboruto than
common ticking, such ns bolster casca
aro inado of. Every scrap of ground
work, howovor, is covered with floss
silk and little strips of ribbon. Gold
tinsol, introduced in lines at intervals
apart, is oxtromoly cfTcctivo too. But to
begin from tho beginning. Tako a picco
of tick, measuring, say, 15 inches
squaro, fold tho corners over till they
moot in u point, and mark with a lino
of thread tho square outline which will
represent tho front of tho handkerchief
caso, sluco thero will bo no need for you
to cmbroidor beyond this outline, or, in
other words, on tho tick which forms
tho back of tho sachet, but you must
bo careful to work complotoly over tho
edges of the front view.
Tho embroidery is carried out in any
varioty of stitches and colorings. Tho
moro brilliant tho silks tho hotter will
bo tho effect; Tho easiest way is to bo
gin by sowing strips of bebo ribbon at
intervals, or using somo of that old
fashioned ribbon worked with a sprig.
If you linvo by you any ribbon that is
ibout half an inch wide, yon can uso
this as strlpa and afterward embroider
it with filoselle. Tho less plain ribbon
that is seen tho better. By degrees cor-

cr up all tho front comers of tho tick
with thick embroidery, as irregular as
you plcaso, though if you liko to intro
duce a littlo uniformity of conrso you
can. You will find that tho uso of bebo
ribbon ekes out tho filoscllo considera
bly and is an economical introduction.
When you havo put in all tho embroid
ery you can, pad tho insido of tho tick
with wadding scented with sachet pow
der nnd lino tho caso with soft pongeo
silk. An art silk handkorchiof will do
capitally, colored in pink or nuy tint for
which you havo a particular weakness.
You will rcquiro a second handkerchief
to cover tho tick nt tho back, nnd you
must sew this with silk to match just
as neatly as you can. Finally bind
round tho outer edgo of tho sachet with
ribbon, harmonizing with tho lining in
color, and fasten tho caso with two
strings of tho same, sowed on to opposito
comers. Tho remaining corners should
bo previously fastened togcthor with a
small 'button and loop.
No Doubt Here.
It is a singular fact that thoro
is such a diversity of opinion as
to the result of next month's
election in tho United States. A
fair majority of the prohibition
people believe that their tickot
will win. Many of tho .Gold
Democrats have a firm faith in
tho buccosb of their candidates.
Nearly all of tho McKinloy and
Bryan peoplo swear by tho heads
of the tickets and, to tell tho
truth, nono of them have a rea
sonable assurance of a majority
of electoral votes. Iu contra
distinction with this thore remains
the fact that tho Free Luuch and
fine boor, now on sale at tho
Anchor saloon, havo captivated
