I&ipctmlve Grenadines With Slllc I.lnlnc.
Bilk Canvn nnd Changeable Alpaca.
Amid tho largo variety of dress materials
prepared for summer wear tho most fash
lonablo and tho most expcnslvo aro tho
transparent cativnfcq and grenadines, which
not only cost n groat deal of money In
thcmgcUcs, but necessitate a silk lining.
Bilk linings aro light of weight and there
fore desirable, but they aro not durable,
unloss tho silk Is of very good quality.
Tho cheaper grades, as well as tlio silk
faced cotton linings, are mere traps for tho
unwary, for they split and pull apart al
most at onco. A dollar n yard or a llttlo
less for skirt lining Is rather nn extrava
gant expenditure, especially when tho nar
row width of silk Is considered. Yet n
durablo silk lining can hardly bo obtained
China silks for gowns aro well liked.
Many colors aro often shown in tho floral
design with which thoy nro covered, but
tho tints aro harmonious and tho general
Silk canvases, which border very closely
on grenadines, aro In flavor. These are
charming over a silk lining, tho latter be
ing often supplied by a last season's gown,
which Is rather too brilliant In tono to bo
worn now. Tho gronadlno over It tones It

down sufficiently to mako It satisfactory.
Black gauze, chiffon and mousscllno do
solo nro hugely used over bright colored
silks, but Bomotlmos a darker shado of tho
samo color Is preferred to black.
Tho ncwnlpacas aro very pretty, somo of
tho shot effects being almost as rich and
glossy as silk. Tho brocho and gout's hair
varieties aro equally attractive
Tho evening gown Illustrated has a skirt
of white satin very much rippled. It Is
bordered Vi Ith a narrow bum! of silk Ixu
cr, nnd tho tubllir has a huge bow of
ruby satin edged with beaver near tho foot.
Tho corhclet ixxllco Is of embroidery, tho
dccollctago being very decided. A drapery
of ruby satin Is curried across tho bockuud
6vor tho upper part of tho onus to form
sleeves, ending In two fans in front. Tho
drapery Is held In placo by brctellcs of em
broidery edged with better.

It is n singular fact that tbero
is such a diversity of opinion as
to tho result of next month's
election in tho United States. A
fair majority of tho prohibition
people believo that their ticket
will win. Many of tho Gold
DamocratB have a firm faith in
tho success of their candidates.
Nearly all of the McKinley and
Bryan peoplo swear by tho heads
of tho tickots and, to tell tho
truth, noiio of them have a rea
sonable assurance of a ninjoiity
of electoral votes. In contra
distinction with this thoreiemniiiB
tho fact that tho Free Lunch and
