A lato dispatch from Cairo givea
Hie following accouut of a victory
other tlian warliko nchiovcd by
ibo British expedition to Don
gola: Cholera was brought to Egypt
,by tho pilgrims returning there
from Mecca in August, 1895. It
showed itself vory distinctly dur
ing the Inst mouth of that year,
but was confined entiroly to Dam
ietta, Lulu Menzuloli, and neigh
boring villagos on tho Mediterra
nean coast. It was successfully
driven out of those positions by
the ouorgy of the English physi
cians ot the Egyptian Sanitary
Doputment, but it unfoitunatoly
gained n strong hold in ono of the
suburbs of Alexandria, where it
Shouldered peacefully until tho
edvout of tho cholera Beaaon,
'which in former epidemics has in
variably been from' May to Sop
tembor or October.
True to its former traditions, it
bkolce out in an epidemic form
last May and, slowly advancing
with human intercourse, it success
fully inaded Cairoand tho Upper
Nile, Hpriously hampering for u
Meek or two tho plans of the
Egyptian troops advancing on
Dougolu. For the first time in the
history of cholera opidoniics in
Oi ioiitiil couutriea, it was deter
mined not to run away from the
onemy, but to stand and fight it
out on tho spot. Tho English
nt-dioal mon eagerly volunteered
for the fray and made themselves
as ubiquitous as possible. Under
theit oiders were placed all tho
available native doctors and
students. Some of these, espe
cially the younger, woiked with
willing intelligence and deserve
tho highest praise; others, unac
customed to any sorious labor,
could ouly be compelled to do
their onerous duties by tho con
stant and reproachful supervision
of tlieir English ehiofs.
Tho infected districts were
thoroughly cleanBed, all natives
were compelled to drink uncou
tamimted water, much against
their will, tho sick and tho dead
yroro isoh t id to prevent infection,
nnd cholera huts were built every
where as a precautionary measure.
Nntr has cholera visited Egypt
so lightly, and any ono who has
witnessed the stamping-out pro
cess must bo convinced that this
is th' true and only method of
fighting tho disease.
In only two of tho country pro
vinces tho cholera proved too
.much for tho Banitary oilicials,
ami in both of those thoie was
some coutuminatiou of tho geu
oinl water bupply. Keep your
water and everything connected
with your water clean, aud you
can afford to laugh at cholera !
Tho mighty Nile, as known to
Western visitors, becomes, a low
nnd almost staguant river in June,
nnd this was, of courso, tho time
iheii oholora was at its worst and
slow victims by moio than three
hundred a day, about thirty of
these being contributed by Cairo.
(In 188IS, the last time cholera
visited Egypt, thoro woro more
than tlneo bundled deaths a day
in 0'iiio alone.)
The Nile slowly rose in height
aud uw,iftries8 until tho Hood in
August provided an abundance of
fresh water for all tho outlying
distriots, and whou tho middle of
September arrived tho Nile waB
nt its height aud cholera had
fadfd awiy. There may bo drop
ping oa&i'b iu tl)n country which
the eneigy of the sanitary officials
will discover, but tho epidemic
war all over iu September, aud
there is no reason why visitors
should i.ot go to Egypt as usuul
'in' November und tho late months.
lnm) be a comfort to some to bo
(told that epidemio cholera has
nevi-f yet been in Egypt botucou
the months of October and May.
Mecca this year was freo from
cholera, so that the returning
pilgrims brought no new edition
of the disease into Egypt. In
order to bo absolutely on tho safe
fide, tho Egyptian Government
has ordcied that all the anti
cholera precautious are to bo con
tinued for Borne months yet.
