STRAW HATS FOR MEN.
Orrnt Yarlctj of Itlli'-rnii Collrco Color
Predominate, Hut There. Are Others.
Hatters this season, for no apparent
reason, hnvo cut down brhus, when
tliey wcro most useful in keeping tho
nun out of one's eyes, and raised crowns
to a height which is not pretty and is
very unbecoming. All tho same, you
havo got to buy theso hats becauso they
aro tho now shape. Thcro aro abont flvo
different styles of straw hats put on tho
market this summer, and they aro being
foisted on every dudo that comes along
to buy, according to tho Now York Her
ald, which says:
Tho smooth straw of last summer,
with tho exception of a narrower brim
and higher crown, is tho fashion this
leason. Thero is also tho rougher straw,
called pineapple, in two patterns both
with straight brims, and still another

after tho hamburg hat, a pretty conceit

worn by men with beards who llko to
look picturesque Then thcro is tho
curly brim straw hat, which suggests a
rather elderly stylo of man mid face,
though tho fellows who wear it do not
wish to bo called uldcrly at all.
With theso shapes an infinity of idens
aro displayed in tho ribbons which or
nament tho straw hat. You will find in
all tho Broadway shops Harvard's crim
son, Yale's blue, Princeton's black and
yellow, Columbia's bluo uutl white
Cornell's red and wliito and Pennsyl
vania's red and blue. All hatters now
keep theso colors in stock, and a bucklo
fastens tho ribbon to tho hat in a very
satisfactory maimer. Not long ago tho
clastic liul ribbon baud was all tho rage,
but it wrinkled and creased and lias now
givcu way to tho bucklu. Apart from
tho popular collcgo colors thcro is an
endless variety of ribbons for hats, so
that a man of any tasto or of r.uy pccul
iarity of tasto can buy his colors to
suit his complexion. As a matter of
fact, men very oft"ii go wrong in this
department of dress and wear ribboua
which dou't suit nt all.

An iuiliicuco of tin wheel noted and
commented upon in tho New York
Times is its bearing upon domestic
folicity. "Wives aud husbands, notably
thoso who havo reached tho early forties
and beyond, havo found n bond of com

strong as it is oftentimes unconscious.
Tho advent of children and tho en
croachments of business cares are two
elements of hfo that slowly forro a man
and wifo apart to n greater or less ex
tent, till, after 20 years of matrimony,
it not infrequently happens that with
out uny jar or conscious estrangement
tho two aro spending most of their timo
in separate pursuits. Into this breach
tho wheel has slipped with n magnetic
power. A common enthusiasm for tho
steel steed brings them together in in
