Snohomish, Wash., Oct. 22.
Tho annual fall slaughter o the
herds of deer that for conturies
had lived practically unmolested
on tho many small islands in thiB
portion of l'ugot Sound has com
menced. Last year tliroo bands
of pot huuturs shipped several
hundred deer to tho neighboring
markets and lessoned the sizo of
tho herds very materially. Most
of these hunters woro Indians
from tho Tulalip reservation at
tho mouth of tho Snohomish river.
Tho trado last yoar proved so pro
fitable to tho Indian managers,
Jack Moses and Long Olmrloy,
that thoy havo hired a number of
Indians for three months aud tak
on up thoir- hondquartors at
Holraos harbor on Whidby island.
Thoy are well equipped with guns
and havo a pack of twenty oxcol

wholesale hunting will undoubt
edly destroy tho entire hords. This
slaughter is in direct violation of
Slato game laws.

"Tho natural bridgo of Virginia
has always been regarded as a
great wonder, and justly so," said
E. R. Paino of Bozetnau, Mont.,
in tliH Washington Post, "but
there is a far greater one in Idaho
near tho Bay Horso mine, which
is known to very fow people, aud
thoy have uovor paid any attention
to it, except to mako sonio oxclatu
ation of woudor whou thoy first
saw it. There is a tuunol through
a granite mountain. Tho tunnel
is a little over a milolong, is wide
enough for a double track rail
road to pass through and is
straight. Tho walls of this natur
al tunnel nro nearly as oven as
they would have been had it been
blasted through by men. Of
course, it has been formed by
orotuou, but how is a mystery.
Scientific rnen can explain any
cavo that ha an entranco at oithor
end, but it does not satisfy Hiobo
who see it. If a railroad should
ovorbe built through that country
the iialurnl tunnel will bo found ex
