Editor Evening Bulletin :
I wish to offer, on nccouut of the
amount of criticism and rumor
still going the rounds, created by
statements made by mo relative to
the safety of tho Opera IIouso
roof, tho following reasons for my
having proseutod my communica
tion so late as five days ago. Some
three woeka beforo my letter ap
peared I called a gentleman's
attention, a resident of Honolulu,
to, in my mind, tho weak points
tho roof coutained and 8kol hint
to soo for himself and try to havo
it repaired. I havo every confidence
in that gentleman's ability. Ho
told mo ho would givo tho matter
his attention. I met him two or
three days later; ho said ho had
Been tho plans and found thorn as
I had stated to him; also said ho
hud nrrantrcd to have tho nrccs
sary repairs made, and I am quito
sure ho stated also ho would let
mo know whon thoy woro com
pleted. Up alpo agreed that tho
matter had bolter be done quietly a9
far as we woro concerned. I heard
no more from this gentleman up
to tho FriMuy my letter ciune out.
, But before I allowed my loiter to go
to the piesflit was reported to mo
direct from the architect's ofiico
thnt tlm work had not been doue.
Thou I lot my letter bo printed.
It is far from mo to criticise a
man's work if T know tho criticism
not to bo just, but I am certaiu in
my own mind tho roof was ro
paired after tho appearance of my
letter Friday evening, and before
tho report of tho committee on
Saturday afternoon. So as for
thot committee's report, which I
think correct without a doubt,
having anything to do will)
tho correctness of my state
ments in my letter iB tak
ing a very wrong viow of tho
matter, for tlmt committee roporlod'
on a repaired roof, for I have it
from good authority tho ropairs
were not completed on that roof
until the forenoon of Saturday
was far spent. I would like to
say also to (ho peoplo of Hawaii,
or whom it mijjlit concorn, that
if it over wns found necessary to
construct largo timbers by build
ing them up of plunks, it would bo
well to have the plai.ks us dry as
possible, and sized to an even
thickness, and well coated with
carbolineum, beforo bolting to-
ether, for there is more or loss
angor of a sort of fungus growth
to tako place between tho planks,
and cause decay, and also a much
hotter chance for ants and othir
wood destroyoiB to work between
' tho planking, which I think would
be greatly guarded against by tak
ing that method of precaution.
Now as for tho proper size of
timbers for a truss to 6pau a
space of u'O feet to carry an ordin
ary slate loof, I would say also
should bo a tie beam 9x12 with
principal rafter 7x9, but in no au
thority I havo over 6een was tho
rafter as largo as, or stronger than ,
tho tio bpum. I can give nmple
proof of this from works that are
authority on carpentry.
I hone this letter will relievo
tho minds of the people of Hono
lulu, of auy impression that I
tried by any method to in juro auy
ouo unjustly or at all. Thanking
you, Mr. Editor, for your valuable
spaco. Peter Hiaii.
