and lighted candles. A baskot of
gorgeous white, and pink pluma
riiis, orchids, etc., stood in front
of tho chief seat. An overflow of
quests was accommodated at a
largo table in tbo autorootn, tho
folding doors between tho two
npartnifiits being thrown upon.
Thos. E. Krouso of the Arliugton
laid a Bplendid feast, including
roast turkey, cold duck and plover,
diversified salads and choioo con
diments, besidos bovornges for all
likiug&and a varied dessert. Tbo
layout was produced under tho
specific prescription of Justico
Whiting.
R. W. M. Phillips sat in the
chief seat, supported on tho right
by W. M. Gilfillun of Hawaiian

breathed his last at his residonco
in Wnikiki shortly before half
past 8 this morning. While in
San Francisco on bis last trip to
tho United States, Minister Willis
wub taken with n severe attack of
pneumonia from the effects of
which ho never fully recovered.
After returning to Hawaii ho ap
parently legained his health, but
ho continued to suffer from weak
ness to such an extent as to alarm
bis friouds. Somo weeks ago he
contracted a sovero eold from tho
effects of which ho had scarcely
recovored when hn was thrown
out of his carriage in a runaway
accident. While be wns not seri
ously injured, tbo shock was too
much for n system nl ready under
mined by disense, and be never
rallied from its effects, tint grew
constantly weaker and weaker
until at last tbo oud came this
morning.
During his long illness Minis
ter Wilis hns been tbB recipient
