Lewis & Co,
"Mnkakakc" sounds, to tho
man with but a superficial know
ledge of the language, essen
tially Hawaiian, out it is not.
Divide it into syllables as you
would a cracker puzzle and try
tho phonetic spelling and you
have "mako a cake." It is
composed of corn, wheat, oats
und rye and is by long odds
tho best preparation for pan
cakes and uiuihus extant. This
is ono of the newest food arti
cles in this market and wo arc,
so far, the only persons selling it.
Fifty varieties of crackers
seem like a good many for ono
houso to carry but that is what
wo havo trom tho Standard
Cracker Co., and they nro in
2lb. packages. You cannot get
a bettor cracker it you searci
tho cracker markets of the
world.
Brilliant shino means just
what it says and it is indis
putably tho best metal polish
in tho market Put up in three
sizes, it is convenient for the
purso and handling. It will
put a polish on brass or nickel
that rivals a mirror.
Layer cako is. a portion of
tho diet of the gods when pro
perly made; at other times it is
repelled. The most delicious
mixture to put between tho
layers is Maple Sugar Cream.
It is made of Vermont maple
sugar, is whipped light and
sold by us in ono pound tins.
For tho culinary department
Applo Butter from the middlo
United States makes delicious
tarts and pies or may bo used
as jam. We sell it in two and
five pound tins.

VIOLIN PLAYING.
fnmtr-mcnt nf tint .rft lUmt I'laylng
In Tone In Itrj.ui' to Htrlnc.
After a reasonably ctn.X bowing hns
been ucquircd, bays a writer in Tho La
dies' Homo Journal, tho study of tho
left linud should bo token up. Tho neck
of tho violin must bo hold between tho
thumb and tho first finger whero it joins
tho hand. Tho ontiro length of tho fin
ger must bo held abovo tho odgo of tho
finger board, and tho fingers must fall
donblo jointed and like tho hammers of
a piano on tho strings tho very ends of
tho fingers touching tho strings. In or
der to produco n clear tono tho fingers
must bo pressed very hard on the strings.
"Strong with tho fingers, light with tho
bow" is tho constant refrain of ono'of
tho most celebrated teachers.
Tho first difficulty curooutcrcd Is that
of playing in tunc. At tho violin is not
snpplied with frets like tho guitar oi
muudoliu tho car is tho only guide
Important as the iructico of tho scales iH
on other lusfrruncnts, it is doubly im
portant ou tho violin, its it is by hcalo
study principally that tho ability to
piny in tuno is acquired. Tho playing
of familiar melodies is nlpo of very
great ndvantago to tho licginncr, as ho
can tell when ho is playing out of tuno,
whero in tho caso of an cxcrclso with
which ho is unacquainted ho cannot no
easily distinguish (his fault. In plarlng
Fcalo pasyagca tho student must oon
stantly nsk himself whether tho next
noto is a wholo step or u half stop dis
tant brforo ho plays it If ho will i;o
through tho cxcrclso beforehand and
mark tho wholo steps and half steps, ho
will execnto it in much better tuno
when ho comes to play it.
In regard to strings, tho best nro tho
cheapest, as they lust longer and givo n
better tono. Tho Q' should bo of cut
wrapped with puro silver wire Tho A
and D should bo of Italian gut, nud tho
E con bo of cither gut or silk. Silk K
strings givo a poor, dull tone, very dif
ferent from tho Ringing brillinnuo of
good Italian gut E's. They nro good for
worm wcntlicr playing' or for persons
whoso fingers pcrspiro very freely. Tin
hair of tho bow should bo renewed ev
ery two mouths in tho caso of players
who practice very murli, as it wears
smooth and will not tnlco hold of tho
string. Tho violin should always bo
kept struiif; np in pitch. Do not let
down tho strings of tho instrument with
tho mistaken idea that you will savo
somo of them thereby. Never neglect an
opportunity to hear good violinists.
Something can bo learned from each. A
student learns ns much from hearing
others play as from prlvato lemons with
n teacher. If you can only tako n fow
lossons, lot it bo from tho best teacher
yon can find. -
Enoolopcd Tomatoes.
For this tho tomatoes should first bo
pooled and then sliced. Following this,
a layer of them should bo placed in tho
bottom of a baking dish and sprinkled
over witli half a teuspoonful of chopped
onions. Abovo should coino n generous
layer of bread crumbs seasoned with
pepper, salt and bnttcr. Repeat with a
iayer of tomatoes, another half tea
spoonful of chopped ouione, witli bread
crumbs and tho seasoning above. TIioko
alternate layers should bo continued un
til tho top of tho baking dish is reached,
breadcrumbs being left on tho top. Over
all should bo poured ono cupful of rich
ftweef milk. Buko iwo "nonra.
SLIGHTLY MIXED.
A pupil Is tho lower grades at tlio
South school brought down tho houso
tho other dny. His father was ques
tioning him about his geography les
son, and in tho course of questioning
asked what is the highest mountain
In this state. The boy answered with
a flash: "Itainlcr beer, pure and Invig
orating and 14,444 feet high."
